Well, I found a 350sb engine block for sale in my area I picked up, the guy says it came out of a Nova in the 70's.

I figure the years dosnt matter because its still a 350. Its just the block right now, but what would I have to add to make it properly fit into my camaro. I currently have a 305sb TBI.

Absolutely nothing. I'm kinda free to do what ever, but don't know my limitations of space.

 

What do you want out of the engine? Do you just want to make it run or performance? Have any ideas on where you want your HP at? Any forced induction? How much money do you plan on forking out? Now is a good time to plan this stuff

 

since they are both sbc you can just swap everything over from your 305... besides obvious stuff lk bearings u should replace... but if you want more power out of it you should do all your upgrades now.

I would def. do cam... get your heads freshened up if not going to better ones.

Would he still be able to use the same crank tho since one is 1 piece rear main?

 

The year of block does matter somewhat. What year is your 305? If it's an '89, then it has a one piece rear main seal. The 1970 block is a two piece rear main seal and it will need it's own flywheel or pressure plate. It will need it's own oil pan. The 305 heads will bolt on to the 350 block but you'll have to use dished pistons to bring the compression in line. The 305 heads are not the best for a 350. They are too restrictive to feed the larger motor in stock form.

Just a block? No crank, rods, pistons, heads, intake etc?

Scrap metal. By the time you buy all the parts, get machine work done, etc, you can buy a crate engine for less money.

 

Go to a junkyard and get complete motor that runs good. I started with a bare block. no bolts. no rods. no pistons just main bolts and caps. I spent a TON of money building a 383. Trick is I couldn't use most of it anyway. I bought vortec heads from a junkyard and took them to the machine shop with my fingers crossed. I ordered ARP hardware. Gmpp tbi to vortec manifold, comp cam, Eagle rotating assembly, rvmorse machine tb, bbc injectors, new water pump, oil pump. lifters, pushrods, etc. I did reuse my valve covers, sensors, distributor, and injector pod. lol. I wouldn't suggest doing what I did unless you know what you are doing. I just got lucky..lol

 

So the question posted by randomdguyd is pretty valid. If you're going to do a performance build, especially a stroker build like Nub383, then you have a good start because you're not going to use much of a stock 350 internals anyway. But if your looking for a stock build, like Stephen 87 IROC suggested, you're going to spend a good piece of change... close to the same amount of money as a performance build on just recovering the stock parts.

This article is a good description of what a performance TBI build is going to look like. It's on a 305 but the plan will be similiar. The differences on a 350 will be no milling on the heads to bring the compression up and the chip/injector selection will have to be specific to a 350.

I'm fixing to buy a bare block myself. Cast number 010 that's bored .040 over (was told the block is from an early to mid 70's car). Far as I know, it's the bare block. I'm looking for a street car, but I'd like to push more than 300 horses. If I could get about 400 horsepower out of it, I'd be completly happy. My current engine in the Trans Am is a 305 HO 4bbl (Edelbrock 600 with Edelbrock Performer Intake... not sure baout my heads).

I plan to spend probably around 1k-2k on this 350 over time. It's just going to sit in the garage and be peiced together slowly until it's finished.

What are some good components you guys would reccomend? I'm staying with a carb... probably going to get another Edelbrock 600 or 700... point is, I'm staying carb'd. What would you suggest for me? Trying to keep it somewhat cheap, but I want to be pushing near 400 horses when it's dropped in.
