700R4- what makes it shift?

Hi all,

just swapped a carbed SBC V8 into my V6 injected bird. used the 700R4 i had gotten with the engine, carbed it and it runs. BUT the trans does not shift....

ALSO, I swapped the V6 plastic gear for the V8 from the bolt inside the rear of the trans on driver side,,which looked the same size.

SO what gets the trans to shift??

Could the gears be so little different that it can be stopping it???
Or could the trans be bad???

Please let me know of ideas or advice.
Thanks,
Ron

Re: 700R4- what makes it shift?

the plastic gear in the tail house is the speedo gear, you need to put the original one back in it, unless you changed the rear end gears, then you need to figuere out the proper set of gears, you have to have the gears mesh properly

do you have the TV cable hooked uo, a TV cable is 100% GOT TO HAVE

will it go through the gears manualy, or does it always stay in 1 or what gear

Re: 700R4- what makes it shift?

yep and if isnt set just right you will burn it, gone threw 2 on the gta, getting ready to put another one in, and if its not set right you will burn the clutches in a matter of miles and it wont go from 2nd gear to 3rd gear.

there should be cable that goes from the passenger side of the trans up to the carb. if its not there it's not gonna shift

you will lose a little fluid when you change that gear, not much

as for the TV as said it goes in the passenger side of the trans, it looks alot like the kick down cable on old trans but its not a kick down, it regulates the trans, its like the computer for lack of better words

Re: 700R4- what makes it shift?

tv cable, kickdown cable, and d-tent ( or something like that) are all the same, it regulates when it shifts and at what rpms it shifts, you can pick a brand new one up at at chevy dealer for around fifty dollars, can find them in a parts store though. and when you install make sure your rubber seal( looks like a litte top hat) is good. there easy to take off but a pain to hook together. goes from back passenger side of tranny to top of intake hooks on by your throttle, thats about all i know about them, lol

Re: 700R4- what makes it shift?

while that cable does have to be hooked up,that is not what is causeing your trans to not shift.there is a plastic gear on the governer that gets old and falls apart, the governer is what makes the trans shift.on the drivers side of the trans towards the rear but before the tail housing there is a round cap (about the diameter of a roll of electrical tape)pop that cap off and slide the governer out and you'll likely find the plastic gear on the end either stripped or completely broken.

That is NOT true! A "detent" or "kick-down" cable only tells the transmission to shift down at WOT. The throttle valve varies internal transmission pressures based on throttle position (hence the name), and if not installed or properly adjusted, you can easily ruin your TH700.

That is only true of the TV cable, not the "detent" or "kick-down" cables of yesteryear.

Re: 700R4- what makes it shift?

redfox, thanks for the PM, but havent had a burning question yet, but will if I do.

89RS - that link was great and I found it on summit for cheaper. they did say it would fit a rochester Qjet. but I am going to look into getting it to fit without this....

does the length of the TV cable matter?? theortically, couldnt i just extend the cable??
as long as the cable is pulled all the way at WOT it will be fine?
what about at idle, does the cable need any tension???

thanks guys!

The cable needs to be fully extended at WOT, but where it is at part throttle is critical - that's what we've been trying to say.

That is more of a matter of the throttle arm geometry than length of cable. If it is a stock carb, no problem. Otherwise, you'll probably need a "geometry corrector" bracket. But, since you said "Rochester", I assume it is a stock-type carb.

Re: 700R4- what makes it shift?

I didn't have time to wait for a geometry corrector to get shipped when I swapped carbs on my K5 blazer, so I just took measurements off my stock Q-jet, drilled and tapped a hole on my holley's throttle linkage using the measurements, used a small bolt for a stud, and wala, it worked fine, put 5000 miles on the truck before I sold it(to buy my camaro) and no problems what so ever.

It's probably the detent cable.. But when my shifter linkage broke I was stuck in 1st... Maybe check the linkage, too.

To replace the TV cable, you have to remove the retaining bolt for the housing at the transmission, then disconnect the cable from the internal hook. It is possible to do it from the outside, but it's probably going to be easier to drop the transmission pan and replace it that way (time for a fluid & filter change anyway, right?).

Re: 700R4- what makes it shift?

wondered why the tires moved so slow...didnt realize my rear drum spring broke and was braking the drivers rear the whole time....
so jacked it up and pulled the brake....

**DOES the TV cable stop it from shifting???
b/c i put it in first, then second, and it moved faster....but this was kind of manually...
Is this normal without the cable??

So, I put the plastic gear in and the speedo works...not sure on the accuracy though...

Summit has the cable and they say it will work...ordering now.....

Re: 700R4- what makes it shift?

all the TV cable does is tell the trans when to shift, and how much pressure to put on the clutches. it MUST be hooked up or you WILL BURN UP YOUR TRANSMISSION

Re: 700R4- what makes it shift?

hey i just dropped a 350 with a 700 R4 into my 92 3.1 liter camaro, and after reading about you guys talking about the kick down cable, you kinda worried me. i made a bracket for it to work on my holley carb, but how do you adjust the cable or put it in the right spot. my dad said it doesn't do much but just tells the tranny when to down shift, at WOP. is that right, my car is like 2 days from done and i dont want to smoke the tranny

No, that is not right, and is a good start on death to a TH700. It is a "throttle valve" cable, not a "kick-down" or "detent" cable. It adjusts internal transmission pressures based on throttle position, and an incorrectly mounted or adjusted cable will cause wrong pressures for a given power level, and burn out your tranny.

Unless you have a q-jet, you need a "geometry corrector" bracket on the throttle arm of the carb. There is a different one for Holley and Edelbrock carbs.

To adjust the cable, depress the "D" button on the cable housing connector at the bracket and pull the cable housing back at the same time. Let go of the "D" button. Floor the accelerator. The housing will ratchet forward and is then in the correct adjustment.

Re: 700R4- what makes it shift?

maybe someone will read it this time-

700 R4 transmissions DO NOT HAVE A DETENT OR KICKDOWN CABLE!

They have a throttle valve or TV cable that MUST BE HOOKED UP, or you will DESTROY YOUR TRANS.

OKAY I am not an IDIOT, there is a cable on my transmission, i was reffering to it as a kickdown cable. MY BAD. i am just asking on where it is possition compared to the accelorator, is it suppose to be all the way out when the throttle is? I am not sure just asking
