if by turbo trans you mean th350 tranny don't do it, you will get horrible gas mileage, bad driveability andwill hate yourself for not keeping your 700r4. As for going carb its all about personal choice and your intentions with the car,

Re: 88 350 tpi to 70's 350 carb?????
Sorry for the long post, but I hope it helps. I had a 1977 350 resting in my shop when I bought an 83z that knocked. Swap motors, simple I thought. Found out it would fit but the dipstick was on the drivers side. This puts it in the way of the manifold. If U run headers, no problem. Smog headers were to $$$$ and others were inspection failures. That was the biggest problem I had with "early" 350's. As for the trans, I have a T-5. Other than buying or building a mount for the torque arm and driveshaft lengths, I do not know what a th350 would be like.

Forgot to mention the fuel pump pressure. Mallory makes a regulator that will allow the electric pump in the tank to work with a carb. U will not have to pull the tank to remove the pump or reroute the fuel lines to the passenger side of the car.

There will always be little things that pop up with any project. A 350 is a great improvement for these cars to me. There would probably be more work in changing to carb than changing to a 350. I believe there is a sticky on changing to carb already. Read it and consider that first.

A couple of details using an older engine in a "newer" car:
Dipstick: Changed from driver side to passenger side in 1980. The tube from a '79-earlier engine gets in the way of 3rd gen f-body exhaust manifold. Headers solves the problem.
Flexplate: '86-newer is one-piece rear main seal crank, '85-older is two-piece. The crank mount changed between the two types. 70's flexplates were typically 168-tooth, which is fine as long as you don't have headers - the starter fits farther out from the block with 168-tooth, and some headers run into it. If you use stock f-body manifolds, shouldn't be a problem. If you get an '85-earlier 2-piece RMS 153-tooth flexplate, the block may not be drilled & tapped for the starter. Just another thing to verify as you put parts together.
