350 Swap+Build Thread
Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
lol ok five7 ill keep the hp down, with that in mind (and a low budget) I am now looking at a 350 short block crate motor made in the 90s that a guy has, he only wants 50 bucks for it, and it can run a mechanical fuel pump. I have a really nice friend who has a mild cam and pocketed and ported heads for free. Ive got the carb buy an aftermarket intake or a junkyard intake even, then buy lifters, and pushrods, gasket set. Swith the starter and the dist over from my 305 and walla 350 for around 200 buckaroos

If you can, get the head casting #'s.
I've lost track of what you're starting with. A stock LG4 aluminum intake is fine for a mild 350. I have a couple laying around, one could find it's way to you, I'm sure.

Well congratulations mark! I'm doing ok, I got the 305 torn down and took off the timing cover. And the timing chain has about an inch of play... it hasn't jumped but it's so loose that the timings off, so i believe that's one of the many reasons ive had so much trouble with this car.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
Why don't you just pull that 305 and put a real engine in there.
Did you get it back together today? I bet that thing runs completely different with the new timing set on it. You can't go wrong with quality parts.

All of my vehicles have v8s, pal.
Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
Ohh lol, sorry luke i didn't see your post there i was commenting on marks post, i got the timing chain on (but not without a fight) but I can't get the timing cover to line up right. It is at an angle and won't allow the ballancer to go on correctly. I think it's because of the oil pan gasket.
Thanks for asking, DacMan

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
I think you should definitely buy it later on, maybe next year. send me your email address on a pm. I lost it.
Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
I know it's been a long time since I posted here, but I have been making progress, decided to remove 305 completley and replace it with a 350 w/ 305 heads and intake, won't have much in the quarter but should kill it in the 1/8. A cam duration of 443 and flat top pistons should give a static compression ration of 10.6 to 1. Hopefully that will lower when I calculate the valves in, I want it to run on pump gas, will post pics later this week or next.
Cheers, DacMan

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
Well they were convenient, and they are the 58cc ho heads which were the ideal heads, I can't remember the casting somthing like 14166 or somthing IDK. I was really popular a few years ago before vortecs, they don't flow all that well but there's a lot of low range torque. I would have bought vortecs but the heads and intake were free since I owned em.
Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
Alright so I got something done today, I decided to repaint my block satin black cause I think it'll look sick with the valve covers I re-did today. First pic is with a lot of cleaning... they were in really rough shape.
Second pic is of them all cleaned and painted, they look like they dripping wet
Third pic is of the maro cause it's bitchin'

We're so proud of you Dac
lol. Seriously though, the car looks great and the motor looks great. Good to see you're getting her together the way you want her to be.

Thanks guys, she's come a long way. I couldn't have done it w/o the help of this thread, and the generous help of LukeJ, A very wise Monte Carlo expert, and my good friends at napa.

Well intrepid I've been busy and gots a lot done, I got all my floor pans welded in from the top, I just gotta patch some spots where the replacment peice couldn't cover. So here's my pics, but keep in mind this was the second time I have ever welded and I am completly self taught.
The first one I did is solid but not real pretty.

The second one I did was real perfect, best patch of the bunch.

The Third was simply tricky.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
This thread has been an awesome read! I bought a 84 Z28 this year, 305 with a decent body. Had to put a new front end in, brakes, starter, and clean the HELL out of the whole car...but man am I thrilled with it. Never had more fun! Dac, your build has taught me a lot about cheap and easy stuff to do at home, and as soon as the car is out of storage, I'm doing it all! Thanks everybody, especially you DacMan

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
Well guys we have a new problem... I can't keep the tires planted on a launch, this thing has too much torque for an inexperienced driver!!! I'm thinking new tires, and some rear end suspension upgrades might help it stick, but im laying at solid patch at 45 mph (i havn't tried full throttle at higher speeds yet), I'm thinking a posi rearend is a must! Anyway bottom line is that this thing is a blast!

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
Well congrats Dac I'm glad you're enjoying it! And I think I have some news you might enjoy. I drug my black Camaro out of the swamp it was in and got it roadworthy today. Brand new tires, calipers, brake pads, rubber lines, spark plugs, yada yada. I fixed the power steering problem I had and adjusted the carb a bit.
How do you like that edelbrock? I'm thinking about getting the same one.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
I love my edelbrock, if i had to do it over again i would have sprung for the endura shine, i found out the performer serries is made by magnetti marelli, which is bull **** bc i thought that it was all american, might consider holley next time. I really need tire though lol ohhh yeah PICS?????

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread
The tires come in tomorrow morning. For right now I have old 14 inch S-10 rims on the front and some cragers on the back. It actually still looks pretty good to be honest. I'll snap some pics tomorrow.
What do you get for gas mileage? I got 27 mpg out of my 1406 and the 355 T top maro I had. I'm hoping for similar in this car.

I'm getting 20 with the Camaro I'm driving now. But the choke is shut all the time and the idle is 1500 rpm lol. I'm working on that.
