400 flexplate issue

When swapping a 400 SBC in place of the 350 in an 89 T/A, what flexplate needs to be used? If I run the 400 flexplate (168 tooth) will I have starter clearance problems with headers?

Thanks,

Re: 400 flexplate issue

you will have to run an externally ballanced flexplate on the 400 don,t know if the 163 will be to big for the headers but your starter will also have to match the flexplate

That is pretty neat wish I would have known about them a few months back. Wonder how well they work?

Re: 400 flexplate issue

Thanks Chesterfield, I talked to the machine shop operator he said they can balance a 350 flexplate to match the 400. I am leaning in that direction.
Thanks again,

Re: 400 flexplate issue

When I did my 400 swap, I stuck with the stock replacement starter and flexplate for a 78 C10 w/ the 400 sbc stock. I did have an issue with clearance on my hedman headers, but nothing a couple whacks with a mini-sledge and a remote solenoid couldn't fix

Re: 400 flexplate issue

The balance plates work flawlessly,as long as you torque your flexplate properly.
If it were me,I'd go with a stock 400 flexplate, and run an entry level ministarter. You can get them for $120-$150,and they don't have to work near as hard to spin your engine over.
