motor swapping gurus I need your help!

As most of you know I finally found me a motor worthy of going into my 85 SC

350, supposed to be tuff with all the stuff done to it, but my question is

When I am pulling the 305 out and keeping my 700r4 what do I do with the computer?
I am running a vacuum advance distributor and a holley 750 double pumper, so what do I do with my computer? DO I need it for anything? What about the torque convertor lockup? How do I go around that?

All your help is appreciated!
Jason

Why? Keep the computer-controlled pieces. At most you'll have to tune your secondaries, but that will be a lot simplier than tuning a Holley DP and mechanical distributor. And, your TCC lockup will continue to work.

If you insist on doing it, you can either hook up a toggle switch (see tech articles), or get a lock-up kit from Summit or Jegs. Your SES light will come on all the time, so take the bulb out.

Hey, you don't even have to run the TCC. You should, but if you don't it doesn't really matter, although it will generate more heat. On one car I just left it alone, and put in a tranny cooler.

Well, not to flame or anything, but computers can be your friend, if you're willing to be their friend.

For what you've spent on the DP and what you still need to spend on a distributor, you could get that q-jet fixed up. You'll also have to get a manifold that will mount the square pattern DP, unless the 350 already has that, or an adapter to go from spread bore to square. Adapters REALLY suck.

I'll get off your back now. Just want to be sure you've considered all the options.

Oh, my TCC doesn't lock, for reasons I haven't discovered, and my tranny hasn't burnt itself to crisp yet. Course, it's mostly stock for now. Will be taken care of when the engine's gotten its steroids...

I got rid of my computer. Actually it's still in the dash, but not hooked up to anything. If I ever do hook up a computer in my car, I'll be running FI. I swapped converters because I wanted a higher stall speed, and installed a tranny cooler. My new converter is a non-lockup, but it shouldn't matter.

One thing that may not work is your cruise control. Not sure what year it started, but at least my '86 uses the VSS signal and the ECM to run the cruise. Without the engine signal, I'm not sure the cruise will work, if yours is of the same variety.

I'm gonna be the ******* here. Anybody that ditches a Q-jet for a pos Holley is either lazy or stupid. And yes, that includes the electronic version (that one in particular.)!!! The stock carb. has more adjustments built into it than any holley or carter ever created. Does it take time to fine tune? Yes. Does it take effort to fine tune? Yes. Is it worth it? Hell Yes!!! You will never get a holley and a vacuam dist. to perform as well in street/strip as you can the stock setup. Doing it correctly you will get better drivability, better mileage, and, within a tenth e.t.,using the CCC parts. Just my professional and personal experiance.
