Another 305 TBI to 350 TBI swap idea

I am looking for an easy and relatively inexpensive swap for a daily driver 91 RS camaro which will substantially improve performance over the stock 305 TBI.
What do you guys think about:

1) 92/93 caprice 350 crate engine (no mods)
2) Edelbrock TBI intake bored to 2"
3)SLP 1 5/8 headers with 3" single cat back
4)Stock TBI Bored to 48mm with 68# GM injectors
5)Stock GM 350TBI police version chip.

Seems to me this is a simple package
that would maybe make around 250 hp and 325
ft/lbs of torque that you could just bolt in.
I really don't have the experience or time to mess around with custom chips, and lots of modifications. All thoughts and comments are appreciated.....bob

Any thoughts on any part of this are appreciated.

Thats what I did to my car, it runs really well, with some of the mods I put in there, the chip that I got wasn't really good enough, do you have the chip number for the caprice chip? I thought that it was 16143692, but I've only found one chevy dealer who could order that chip, and when I got it, it didn't run much better than my old chip. What is the number for the caprice chip you have, or are going to get?

Mike, glad you responded. The 92-93 Caprice
SEO police chip I have is #16220837.I checked with several dealers and only one could find this part number but he was pretty sure it was correct. Check my post on the Prom board cause one guy confirmed that this is the number on the SEO chip. BUT, check my other post on the prom board. It appears that this chip may or may not work with my ECM which is different than the ECM in the 92/93 caprice!!
I thought I had found a simple solution but NFW, nothin is easy. My ECM is a 1228746 while the 92/93 Caprice ECM is either a 16135320 or a 16136965. Apparently the programs in the E-proms are different for different ECM's.
That may be why your prom dosn't work well. Did you get the prom for a 92/93 caprice?? I would really like to know cause if you did and it doesn't work well, then that confirms its a different program. You might try a prom for a 89 Caprice, I think it has the same ECM that you have. Check out this site http://www.cruzers.com/~ludis/c3xref.html
to be sure.
Do you know if the 89 police engine ran the bigger injectors? Even if it did though, its a different cam, so don't know how the 89 prom would work with a 92/93 engine.

How satisfied are you with the swap? how much power do you think you are making? Do you have any times? Do you think it is enough gain to justify the money?
Let me know how you come out on this cause
I am Debating what to do if I can't use the stock SEO 92/93 chip in my set up.That was the whole point, use the bigger police injectors and a matching GM prom for better performance. Let me know what you think...bob

I thought about something like this too one time.

However the Caprice engine is an LO5 the LO3 big brother if you will. The LO5 has the same type of "tumble port head" the LO3 does. Into words they won't flow very well. I've been told the LO5 could be expected to make 220hp and maybe with good tuning, headers, ideal cam 250hp like you want.

Someone mentioned to me, it's going to cost almost as much as a Vortec...but not be able to make the hp the Vortec could...

Best Wishes

Brian, I looked at the Vortec real hard. I think it is by far the best deal out there.
I have to meet emissions in colorado and most likely need an EGR to do it. I know its possible to tune around that but still have visual to deal with) I was concerned about the plumbing for the EGR manifold as well as getting throttle,Vacum, heater, AC support bracket etc to work right. I was also concerned about getting the tuning down since I don't do my own chips. What kind of problems did you run into and what kind of chip did you use? How is the drivability and reliability? Thanks for your thoughts...........bob

Hey there, I just wanted to throw in my .02
I put a brand new LO5 goodwrench in my 92 RS,
and I love it. Its been 3 trouble free months with much increased power, and believe it or not way better mileage then that wimpy 305 would ever dream, I was amazed...Also I will add that I drive 70 miles each way (140 daily) each day... And I live in New Jersey, with real brutal emissions laws...(Road side inspections) where they can take your inspection sticker, right there on the spot....I installed all the stock equipment from the 305...All original tbi, intake, exhaust, prom, and distrib., everything was from the 305. I did replace the 02 sensor. The GM rep said I would get even more power if I bumped up the tbi injector, and that would allow this motor to be "near potential"...And yes it cost more then a vortec motor, and yeah-man that sucked, but again it needs to be legal...
GoodLuck dude
