Motor and trans

ok, thinking about redoing my gutted 83 firebird sometime in the near future. Probably gonna go with a decent 383, balanced, blueprinted, gonna be carb for now, till i get the $$$ for an accel tpi setup. Was wondering how much horsepower i could put out and still use a manual trans? Not too worried about scattering it all over the road; i can get it built to handle pretty much whatever I can give it; but was kinda worried about having to keep up with the motor. Don't wanna blow an expensive motor because of one lousy mis-shift, after all. Prolly gonna run about a 150 shot of nos too. Anyone got any idea about how much HP/TQ i should go for? Or if it's a better idea to get a built auto?

spend less than 200 dollars on a rev limiter or a msd6al.
