Totaled my daily driver, need help putting together a new one.

Ok so I have an old beat up 91 rs that had an engine swap a few years back. I took out the old 305 and replaced it with a rebuilt 350 from an 89 firebird formula. I never could get the fuel injection straight because I stuck with the tbi system from the 305 and finally the tranny went out. The car ended up being parked up with under 10k on the rebuilt engine. Well a few nights ago I fell asleep at the wheel and totaled my truck. I don't have the money to go out and buy a new vehicle and I only had liability so I'm not getting anything from insurance. I also have an 88 camaro with a blown engine and a straight body that has been used for the strip the last few years. I plan on pulling out the 350 from the rs and putting it in the 88 to make a new daily driver (if only temporarily). So anyway, I have a few questions about the swap.

First off, I have a pair of headman shortys and I'm wondering if they'll bolt up to the stock y-pipe from the 91.

Second, I've been searching for a how to on making the earlier style intake fit to the newer style heads but I can't find anything.

And finally, the carb on the 88 is a 750 demon. I know I need a smaller carb but I'm not sure exactly what size so I'd really appreciate some suggestions.

I've really been wanting to get back in a 3rd gen I just wish it was under different circumstances. If anything's confusing or more info is needed just let me know. Thanks.

Whatever intake is on '88 heads will bolt right on to '89 heads.

That's assuming the '88 has '88 heads on it, which, having been a strip car, it may not. The only difference between the early and late intake bolt mounting pattern was the angle of the center two mount bolts on each side. The earlier manifolds can be modified by elongating those bolt holes so the bolts go in. You can find angled washers, or have the hole mounting faces milled to the proper angle.

No 3rd gen shorty headers mount to a stock y-pipe.

A 750 will be fine on a 350. More than you need, perhaps, but not more than can be used.

Thanks five7 that's what I needed to know. But with the shorty's i'm pretty sure they're headmans but not 100%. Does it matter what y pipe I buy as long as it's for a 3rd gen or does it have to match the headers?

Also I'm going to need to install a push button start. If anyone knows where I can get a decent looking one or have any pics of your install it'd really help.

The headers have to be for a 3rd gen. If you want a y-pipe to fit, it's going to have to be made for the headers (which already have to be made for the car).

If your headers are Hedman, and they're made for a 3rd gen, the only possibility of buying a y-pipe that fits the headers would be if the y-pipe came from Hedman. Anything else would have to be modified.

Ok thanks man. I'll just buy a hedman y-pipe and see if it will bolt up. If it doesn't I guess I'll be buying a set of hedman headers. lol

Hedman has used two different collector flange types for their 3rd gen hedders. Make sure you get the proper y-pipe to match your hedders.
