I was wanting a second opinion. I have my 402 just about ready to drop in but I also just came across a another 500 caddy complete in car with T-400 for $200. Since my car was a 2.8 and I'm going to have to get another trans I thought it might be worth it to just build the 500 and freshen the trans. I'm trying to get into the mid to low 11's and the cad is 100 LBS lighter, 100 cubes more and comparable in cost to build.

I'm going to get the cad anyway but should I build the cad and use the 402 to put together a 12 second grocery getter for the wife? Or shoul I stick with the original plan and try for 11's with the 402?

Yes it's sick but I say DO IT!!! Talk to the guys at CMD (they advertise in Hot Rod and such)about what you need to do the install. Remember "there's no replacement for displacement". Just be prepared for the inevitable idiots commenting "thats a funny lookin small block". Good luck and happy hunting. By the way, Trans-dapt makes a nifty adapter plate to mate the standard chevy pattern trans to the BOP engines. The other option is to do a 2004R with an aftermarket torque arm like the SSPE unit. Don't waste your time putting a TH400 in the car, overdrive is the way to go.
