ZZ4
ZZ4
what are the specs for he ZZ4? (i.e. valve sizes, does it use roller lifter?, timing chain or belt?, HP rating etc.) And is this the same engine they use for smog legal conversion kit from 305 LG4 to 350 for 3rd gen?
Thank you very much for the info?

It is the engine used in the conversion kit. It uses the aluminum heads w/58cc chamber, 2.02/1.50 valves, about 10:1 CR, roller lifters, one-piece rear main seal, timing chain. About 355 equines.
Edit: Oops, 1.94" intake valves.

Yes the ZZ4 is used in the LG4 conversion kit.I was looking at that swap but will probably go with the caprice motor instead due to my lame budget. The specs for the motor and the conversion package are strait from a product bulletin i picked up at a GM dealer.
ZZ4 HO Crate motor
-part#24502609
-355hp@5250rpm 405tq@3500rpm
-10:1 cr
-4bolt main,aluminum pistons,lt4 nodularcrank,lt1 rods
-hydraulic roller cam pn#10185071,valve lift .474"/.510",duration 208/221 @.050 lift
-Cylinder Heads cast aluminum,58cc,angled plugs pn#10185087,valve diameter 1.94/1.50,lt4 valve springs,1.5:1 rocker arm ratio
HO 350 Conversion Package
-pn#10185077
kit includes
-ZZ4 motor
-high flow manifolds,dual cats,3in exhaust
-dual snorkel air intake
-ho in tank fuel pump
-special PROM chip,fan switch
-q-jet secondary metering rods
-pressure regulator spring, boost valve and servo assembly for the tranny
-rca's with hd bushings
i believe this kit also comes with a complete insruction manual for the swap
the bulletin says this swap performed on the chevrolet raceshops 1987 test camaro with all emissions produced 308hp@5000rpm and 365lb-ft tq @3500rpm and ran 13.83@98mph
Sorry this post rambled so long ,hope this helps.

When you say caprice motor do you mean the one in the GM parts catalog called "Caprice TBI Engine"? I am curious about it, do you know any power specs for it?

Question about this ZZ4 conversion kit for Camaros. The GMPP says that it's legal for 82-87 Camaros with LG4 or L69 motors and 700R4 trannis. My 86 Caprice has the LG4 and 700R4. Would this swap be "emissions legal" in my application?

Has anyone seen the price on the full emissions legal kit? This has the engine, intake snorkels, and some tranny parts for like $4,400 bucks. I found this at www.paceparts.com Does anyone know where you can get the same thing for maybe a little less cash?

Well I'd use a 92-93 Caprice 9C1 exhaust system. I just put one on my 89 9C1 Caprice, fits perfectly. It increases the y-pipe diameter from something like 1 7/8 to 2+ in the pipes and from 2.25" to 3" at the collector all the way back to the muffler. MAde a huge improvement on the old butt-o-meter.
The LG4 => ZZ4 swap is legal for the F car because they did it at the #3350 (?) test weight.
It should work just as well for the Caprice, but the exhaust systems are completely different. (And I'm told the twin cats are a big help).
So, if you got the kit, you'd have to broom a lot of it. You get it at a screaming good price, so you can off it on the board for a decent price.
Might be better to cherry pick from the list and then add things like 9C1 exhausts, shift kits, etc. etc.

When chevy did their tests on it they used the qjet that came with the car to keep it emissions legal and it ran low 13's completely visual and sniffer legal. The kit comes with different metering rods for the bigger, more powerful engine. If you just want to put the engine in and skip the kit you can get complete specs on everything from the chevrolet website. (I have been making my own list so I can save some money and just build a similar motor)

I've got the printout for the conversion description sitting beside me as I type this. It has this sentence: "Note the entire HO 350 conversion package must be installed exactly as described in the manual to comply with emissions regulations. Also note that this conversion is certified only for the specific year models, engines, and transmission listed above." Picking and choosing from the kit will NOT result in an emissions-legal setup, nor will putting all or parts of it in other than an '82-'87 auto tranny 3rd gen!
That's the technicality side. On the real-world side, you could get a ZZ4 to run in other setups so that it would pass visual and sniffer - you just wouldn't have the sticker saying it is legal.
check out www.spoperformanceparts.com under "crate engines" for more details. I haven't seen anything to indicate what type of timing chain setup it uses, but it is different than the ZZ3 according to the service parts list. It does use hydraulic roller lifters (as did the ZZ3). I couldn't tell you what kind of mileage to expect, but at least the conversion kit info recommends the use of premium fuel. They typically recommend a Holley 750 for it, but that's because it's considered a pre-emissions or off-road engine (conversion kit excepted).

I read from Camaro Performers Magazine (Winter 2001 edition) that a ZZ4 350 conversion kit for LG4 with manual transmission is in the works. How far along is this?
Luv this site. Just going thru message board is very informative.

The technical side was just what I was wondering about. I was just thinking that it would be a great swap into my 86 Caprice. I don't have to worry about the legal technical side of where I live. So the swap is still a potential one for me. Thanks for the info!!!
