Cams

It has been a while since I have done a SBC and I am trying to decide what cam to go with. The engine is a LB9 TPI 350. I plan on going to a carb setup with a Edelbrock Performer intake ,600 CFM carb and headers. rear is the stock 2.73 was planning on going to 3.73 and maybe 2800 or so stall(to come at a later time). I think I am going to leave the bottom end stock as well as the heads. Just want a solid running car. Any idea will be useful. Thanks..

Re: Cams

Well, if you have the flat tappet motor, which in 86 was a 1 piece rear main seal but non roller, then it will be cheaper to go with a flat tappet cam, but if for whatever reason you have a OE roller, here is a cam for you, priced right and runs its tail off with a mild engine combo(i have one):

That is a great cam for the heads you have. If not, there are some great flat tappet cams ground close to those specs. It will suck till you get a 2500 stall, but it will still go and will bennifit TONS with the 3.73 gears.

Re: Cams

'91 would be a roller cam engine... but is it a 305 or 350? The LB9 designation is for the 5.0 TPI...

Re: Cams

You will need the machine shop to spec the heads for you. The stock springs probably wont cut it. But a set of LT1 springs, locks and retainers will probably do the job.

Yes, but the cam has too much lift for the heads. The valve retainers will hit the top of the valve stem guides, and the only way to fix that is to pull the heads and have the top of the guides cut down. You can do it yourself if you buy the right cutter, but a machine shop should be able to do it quickly. If you ask them to install positive-type stem seals which require cutting the top of the guide, this takes care of the issue and gives you a better type of seal.

That is with 1.6 rockers. It is .492 lift with the 1.5 rockers.

Re: Cams

Like i said, a set of springs, locks and retainers should be all you need, a machine shop should be able to get you a set of LT1 springs and locks/retainers for cheap. Ebays will even have some cheap ones like i have on my 86 TA with the same cam. I went over kill since i wanted springs that are good for 550 lift. I have 1.6 rockers on the exhaust side.

Correct. And, it's the LT4 Hot Cam. There was no LT1 Hot Cam.
