another swap with a twist

Ok, to make this simple. I have a 91 305. I want 350. If I buy a pre-87 motor will I have any problems with brakets, or sensors? I just want to know if the old 350(non-centerbolt) has all the provisions the new 350(centerbolt) has. I can get the old style cheaper but was wondering if it would cost any more money to put it in rather than the direct fit new 350. I already I know I will need the adaptor plate for the TB but I was wondering if there was anything else I should know?
Thanks guys,
Scott Rooper

welcome to thirdgen scott, we're damn near neighbors. you shouldn't have any problems with sensers or brackets. you'll want to use a flex palte ,or fly wheel for the 2 piece crank seal (pre87 engine) the one you'd have on the original engine will have a small counter weight welded to it, the old style don't.

hey man, I'm just down the road from you in ashland ky. Anyway I'm swapping an older 350 into my 91. I'm using an 84 flexplate that I got new for about $25.00. But one thing I don't understand what do you mean tb adapter?
If you use the original 305 manifold it should fit with just minor enlongating of the center bolt holes. But you would be better off buying a new or used aftermarket intake. Anyway good luck and I hope to see you around the car shows and races this summer.

TB adapter is so he can mount the TBI system on a carb intake. It's $45 from holley and they make just about every adaptor imaginable, even coolant heated.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help. I am assuming that the flywheel will work with my starter and everything? I just cant understand why they want 1050 for the new style motor and only 700 for the old style. Besides the fact one has centerbolts and that other doesnt. I am definatly going for the older style. Besides, an aluminum intake will look alot better than the one I have now!! Again thanks, and if anyone else has any info they would like to add I would really appreciate it.
P.S. Does anyone know the part # for the adaptor plate I need?

The difference in price is because the newer one has a roller cam and the older one is hydraulic.....

Depends on your intake. Go to www.holley.com and check em out.

Agree that's the difference in price, but technically, they're both hydraulic. The later have hydraulic lifters with a roller contacting the cam, the earlier have hydraulic lifters with a "flat" surface that follows the cam.

The one piece rear main seals is supposed to seal against oil leaks better than the two piece kind. At least that's what the local chevy dealership told me. I don't know if it works or not but I've never had any trouble from my old style block. I don't have a lot of experiance with tbi but I just thought it might be easier to get a aftermarket intake that you could use. I didn't know you could adapt a tbi unit to a carb intake. I guess you learn something new every day.
