New Pistons with stock crank & rods??

ok I have gone from just droping the L98 in my camaro TPI and all, to going with a carb intake and new cam setup, to head work, and now thinking since the engine will be that far down go ahead and freshin up the bottme end.

My question is would the stock crank and rods be good to reuse with some new pistons on them? and if so what are a good set of piston to use?

Yes, the stock crank and rods are fine to use with new pistons.

Typically, new pistons aren't required unless you need to do a clean-up overbore on the cylinder walls, or you need to change the compression ratio with dished or domed pistons to make up for cylinder head combustion chamber size.

Since you're planning on using the L98 heads, the only viable reason is #1.

With a light glaze breaking of the cylinder walls, assuming no excessive wear or scoring, you can reuse the pistons with new rings.

Re: New Pistons with stock crank & rods??

Well I think I will just use all the stock bottom end and go with a good clean, rings, and bearings.

Unnecessary with a mild build, especially when reusing the original pistons.

In almost 40 years of putting engines together, I've balanced a grand total of one engine.

Re: New Pistons with stock crank & rods??

After talking with my engine guy. I am going to pull the top end down, and then take the bottom end and heads to him to look at. I am going to have the heads done all the way. Now for the bottom end , if everything is in good shape he is going to just take it all down, and put new bearings in and just use the stock crank, rods, and pistons.
