The Ram Jet puts out identical power as the ZZ4. Actually, you can take a ZZ4 and do simple cam swap for about 380 Hp. It's hard to break that barrier without increasing the flow capabilities of the cylinder heads. Have you looked at www.sallee-chevrolet.com? They sell a lot of motors that they build in their own shop including fully forged setups. You might find something you like.

Their peak Hp and Tq numbers are almost identical, the ZZ4 actually has 5 more in both catigories, but that doesn't tell the whole story. The ramjet's cam is a 196/207 duration at .05 inches of lift where the ZZ4 has 208/221. This translates into power coming in at much lower rpm's, which is what rules the street. For example, at just 1600 rpm's, which is below most of our cars stall speed, the ramjet already has mustered up 370 ft. lbs. of torque; I'd like to see the ZZ4 try and match that for low end power. Also, flat torque curves are good for a street machine, and the ramjets torque only varies by 70 ft. lbs. from 1600 to red line, which is a carpenter's dream. If you want to do good at the strip, or save some loot, go with the ZZ4; but if it's the streets you want to dominate I wouldn't sacrifice my low end torque for some high end horse power. Move over ZZ4, the generals got some new tricks up his sleeve!

Wow, I didn't know they used different cams. Good catch, Remondj2. But that even sways me more towards the ZZ4. You're misapplying the age old concept, 'torque rules.' That is really intended to delineate between a high stall, high rpm, 11 second thumper and a good powerful street motor that doesn't get pushed beyond 6000 rpm. The lesson is to create as much torque as possible in an rpm band that will produce the best results for your needs while keeping in mind gearing, vehicle weight, etc. That rpm band is not from idle to red line. It's a much smaller band (about a 2500 rpm spread) where your vehicle will spend most of it's time while accelerating. Creating a ton of torque off-idle and falling down at 4000+ rpm isn't a recipe for speed. It's a tow motor. In the world of 13 second cars and slower (ZZ4 territory), what works at the strip works on the street. Going on the cam specs you stated earlier I absolutely guarantee that the ZZ4 will outrun the Ram Jet. It's just a matter of setting up proper gearing, stall speed, and suspension. When I used a ZZ4 in my 68 Elky I had a 2500 stall converter (absolutely streetable mind you), 3.73 gears, and a suspension that would bite. At full throttle I'd chirp the tires and all you would see is tail lights. I might eventually get outrun by a more powerful car… but that's Hp again, not torque. In reality, the ZZ4 could benefit from a little more aggressive cam.

I think a ZZ4 or ZZ3 is a great engine a friend of mine has a ZZ3 in his 1980 Camero and that hums pretty good.....But then again he always says "I'd rather have my engine in your car" because It looks better.....

I'm actually thinking on going for the GM Performance (Base) 350 HO From Jeg's there charging $2099 for the assembled Crate...What would I need to buy otherwise like distributor, waterpump, etc..... and how much would it cost for someone to just put the engine in? I've got an 87 Iroc-z with the LB9 305 TPI and the 700-R4 Trans

Don't quote me on this cloud, but I belive the 330 horse crate form GM uses a non roller cam, so I hope you weren't thinking of toping that thing off with the tpi from your original engine. The ecm won't work right unless you have a roller cam in there.
