What wires do i really need in my engine compartment
I am trying to set up a 454 with a t-56. I dont know much about wiring and all the other stuff. I was wondering what wires i would need and which i need to eliminate. I am going to run a carb on it so i would like to have the engine compartment looking as clean as possible. If anyone can help i would really appreciate it. If some one has some pics that would be great sincera i dont know much about Parts and their names. Thanks

The big harness bundle that comes up from the passenger fender well can be completely removed. I would suggest that you disconnect it rather than cut it - someone else may be able to use it. The engine computer is mounted under the dash above the passenger's feet. Remove the panel under the dash, the computer is bolted up there with two screws. Remove them and drop it down. Now remove the connectors attached to it. One harness goes to the kick panel to the right of the passenger's feet. Remove that panel as well, and you can unclip the harness from the metal body panel it passes through. From the outside of the car, remove the plastic fender liner, and you can pull the computer harness up and out from the engine compartment after you disconnect it from the engine.
The wires that you will need all come from the bulkhead connector in the back corner of the engine compartment on the driver side (except the heater control harness - it comes in behind the passenger side head of the engine).

The piece dangling from the bracket in your middle picture is the knock sensor module. I think it's safe to say you won't need that.

Re: What wires do i really need in my engine compartment
Actually i do. Most of the time when it comes down to heavy weight bars to remove the bolts that aré almst welded by the rust. Re: What wires do i really need in my engine compartment
The canister is for EVAP. Carbs dont use that. Trace the steel line back to your fuel tank and cap it
The funny shaped unit with the long cable attached is the cruise unit, keep or toss, your call
The module is for ESC, aka knock detection like five7kid pointed out, lose it. The bracket it mounts to held the fan, fuel and AC clutch relays. Keep what youll use. These are easy to relocate too. Fan/fuel require one wire lengthened each
The harness near the trans tunnel controls the HVAC stuff. To get it out you must remove the HVAC head unit. Once that is unplugged the harness should pull through the firewall

If you remove the canister and cap the vapor line, you'll need to use a vented gas cap.

If you plug off the vapor line from the tank and don't use a vented cap, you'll create a vacuum in the tank as fuel is used. Eventually the pump won't be able to draw fuel out of the tank until the cap is loosened.
If you don't have the vapor canister installed and leave the vapor line open, you'll get fumes in the engine compartment. Some people put a filter on the line, but that only keeps dirt and insects out.
A couple of years ago I was at Checker Auto Parts and was looking at gas caps. Right next to the "correct" cap for our cars was the adjacent part number (I don't remember if it was one number lower or one number higher), identical to the "correct" cap except it was vented. I believe it was the Stant line.

Re: What wires do i really need in my engine compartment
ok so i removed the little black canister and the other thing that i dont know what it is, do i need the cable that comes from the side of the ac unit and the other piece that is on top. one more thing do i need the little round ball looking thing that sits under the driver side fender. sorry for not naming parts but i dont know what they are called. thanks
Re: What wires do i really need in my engine compartment
The harness is for the HVAC system. Pull the HVAC head unit in your console and it will unplug from there and can be pulled through the firewall
The ball is another vacuum canister. This one is for cruise

Do i need whole plastic ac unit that runs in the inside. Am i better off taking it out.
Re: What wires do i really need in my engine compartment
Only the engine bay HVAC box is specific to AC or non. The under-dash ducting simply moves the air to your vents. If you're also dumping the heater core, then remove those too

Re: What wires do i really need in my engine compartment
I just pulled a 454 out of mine and from what I could tell not many of the original wires from the harness were used at all. Who ever put mine in didn't do a very good job IMO but the car ran fine. They just kind of unplugged things and left the wires dangling. I am in the process of putting a LSx in mine so if you need some BBC headers let me know because I'm about to put them up for sale.
Re: What wires do i really need in my engine compartment
There is a black 4 pin connector thats different from any other connector on the car. Depending on the year it will have 1-3 wires in it. Heavy red, heavy black, light blue
Red is battery 12v and is sometimes in a separate connector close by
Black is ground
Light blue is AC request from the HVAC head unit

Build your AC controls similar to this, but without the ECM wire. All it does is bump the idle up when the AC is engaged. A carb will have no provision for such
For no AC cars, but retaining heat, this connector is still required to power up the blower fan. Just ignore the light blue wire

Re: What wires do i really need in my engine compartment
sorry for high jacking your thread, but i have a question realating to this. Am i to understand that if you don't have cruise control you don't need to keep the vac ball and the wierd thing in the first picture that is connected to the throttle via a cable?

Im assuming you can plug those somewhere along the way to wherever they lead. Im just taking out the whole thing for the new engine i am putting in. Ill post some pics probably this weekend.
