BBC & T5 tranny
BBC & T5 tranny
I have a '72-'78 454ci motor...out of a truck
not sure what year it is but...
for moving around purposes...I'm gonna take my T5 and bolt it together...
Can I use my stock flywheel? (from an '84 Z28 L69)
Anything else I would need or should concider?
I know that this tranny is not very strong so dont worry about that.

That tranny isn't going to last a week. The T5 is the weakest tranny from GM. They didn't even trust it behind a simple 350 and lots of guys here have had problems. HP doesn't kill tranny, it's the torque. If you build a BBC to make less than 300 ft-lbs then MAYBE it will last you a little longer. Good luck, just wanted to point out that it just wouldn't be worth it. It's going to be tricky getting the BBC in and won't be cheap, then the tranny is going to be your weakest link
. What are you going to do if it breaks in a couple of weeks?

The 454 uses an externally balanced flywheel. Your flywheel is for an internally balanced engine. Physically it will bolt up and will work on the engine but is totally not balanced for the big block.
If you put it on JUST TO MOVE THE CAR AROUND, and don't run the engine very much, you might get away with no problems.
You also may run into a starter motor problem. If I remember correctly, the big block has both starter patterns. Check this before putting the engine in.
REMEMBER, the flywheel will fit but don't run the engine very much.

For moving it around only, it will work. If it will bolt up is different. I know the 454 is externally balanced but I don't know if the flywheel is weighted likw on the 400SB.
EDIT: jms, you beat me to it.

Flywheel weighting is identical to the 400, just like flex plates. For my 400 I had a L69 flywheel "unbalanced" to the 400/454 spec, which was easy to do by drilling about 20 7/16" holes around one half of it. Of course I didn't just take a drill to it myself, I had a balance shop do it, but the balancing itself isn't very high-tech or anything.
The others are right, your 84 T-5 won't live very long behind a big block, even a weak one like that, if you drive it very enthusiastically. I have had a great deal of trouble with my T-5 over the years.
You will need to drill the inboard starter bolt hole in your 454 block. Use a long drill bit, and the starter nosepiece as a guide.

Why the hell would he have to drill the block? Use your SBC starter and change the snout to the staggered mounting bolt pattern. Putting a BBC in is not that big a deal. It just takes a little patience and NOT a whole lot of modifying (unless your putting in Hookers)

Pull 4 plug wires when you need to move the car! LOL. I can just see the t-5 start shaking when you fire the BBC!
