305TPI to 350 TPI

Hey everyone hope some people can make sugestions.

I have a 92 z28 that has some engines damage due to lack of oil so I figured I would put a 350 in there.

I am wanting suggestions on some engines to use, I want to keep it TPI so take this into consideration.

I was going with the ZZ4 but I have a few buddies that say everyone they know that has done this swap with TPI can not get it tuned and running right. Can anyone shed light on this?

I was also considering GMs HO 350. so if anyone can help with this Please do I can't make a decision cause I want it bad *** but I want it done with no problems.

thanks

Forget the 350HO until somebody comes out with a viable TPI manifold to mount to Vortec heads.

The ZZ4 can be done - have a buddy that did. But, with all the other things he did, his experience isn't of much value to you if you simply want to bolt a ZZ4 under your TPI.

The ZZ4 does not have exhaust cross-over passages in the head, so the EGR has to be fed to the intake from the exhaust manifold/header.

The Gloen motors make good power so they say but the are 2 bolt main ironhead ironcrank unless you want to pay alot extera. The ZZ4 with a HOT cam and 1.6 rockers will make big power and will last, 4 bolt main aluminum head forged steel crank.

If you are willing to change the intake base & runners, injectors (you didn't say which engine you have now, may we presume 305?), perhaps TB, and go with a custom chip, the ZZ4 would make a great TPI engine. You just need to pay attention to the details as you go along.

Or, get a ZZ4 shortblock and put your choice of aftermarket heads on it to match whatever you do with the TPI. Remember, it's the "package" that makes an engine run well. That means the cam, heads, intake, runners, injectors and programing all have to be chosen to work together.

Have the people "known" to have done this swap done something about the EGR? If they just left it blanked off and didn't redo the PROM, there's a problem right there. Fuel pressure? Adjustable makes it possible to feed the engine what it needs. Did they stick with the stock runners, plenum, base, TB? Mismatched with the ZZ4 cam. Etc., etc., etc.

I currwntly have the 305 TPI which has some damage to it so i figured go with the 350....

so is everyone saying go with the zz4 instead of the HO GM 350? I know its not as bad *** as the zz4 but its an option for $1000 less.

Also any other suggestions????

What I have done is turn the EGR off in the PROM and left it in place. For two reasons one at inspection time if it is there they have on way to know if it works or not, and that way you dont have to buy a block off.

That's funny, LOL. There is a way to test if the EGR works, and it is a pass or fail situation only. By applying vacuum to the EGR when the vehicle is in idle, the engine should mis-fire or stall. If this does not happen, by emissions laws, you fail. Period. That is how an EGR is tested.

If you want infomation on PROM programing you can check the forum there is a bunch of info on the hardware and software you need to burn your own chip

In North Carolina EGR is a visual inspection only unless you fail emmisions test and it will not keep you from passing that. If they actualy test the EGR in you state then you will need to get the tube from an L98 vette setup.
