89 to an 85, will it work?
im swapping an 89 engine v6 from my wrecked RS to my recently purchased 85 RS with a tore up engine, will the sensors fit the newer engine? people have suggested swapping the harness, but i doubt that'd work either. im just asking people about tips and pointers what should i make double checks on and what should i look out for? Or post a link that will show me common mistakes on swaps or rare mistakes, or get me diagrams

are both six? if so i beleive you just have to change the intake manifold to the fuelie, the motors should be almost identical minus the intakes and maybe distributer

Re: 89 to an 85, will it work?
The dizzy may or may not work, depending on whether the 85 has the one-size-fits-all distributor style with interchangeable caps.
The things that need to be changed include (if the 85 has fuel injection):
Throttle body
Oil pressure sending unit connector (if it's a 3-wire unit on the newer engine)
Alternator from 85 to the newer engine
If the 85 has v-belts and isn't serpentine, you'll need to swap over the brackets and accessories and replace the water pump (water pump turns in opposite direction on the serpentine setup and won't work with v-belt, unless you want to change the pullies out on the alternator and the other parts to use the serpentine belt)
If you don't want to swap the throttle body, you'll need to rewire the IAC and TPS connectors.
:edit: Almost forgot. The 89 engine is internally balanced. If the newer car has an auto and the older one has a manual, you'll need to replace the flywheel, and vice-versa for the other way around. You can't use an externally-balanced flywheel/flexplate with the 89 engine as the bottom end will shake itself apart.
There's probably more, but that should get you pointed in the right direction.

Re: 89 to an 85, will it work?
fortunately both are automatic, still think flywheels will have any problems? and yes, the 85 engine has been taken to pieces, ill look at the water pump and check on what you're talking about, and the 89 is bout to be pulled once the weather gets like 15 degrees higher, and what do those 2 abbreviations stand for? IAC and TPS. so, do they make adapters for any wiring i would have to swap or will i have to splice everything myself into the socket for the sensor?

IAC is the idle air controller and the TPS is the throttle position sensor. No, they don't make adaptors. Cut the pigtails (connectors plus about 2 inches of wire) from the 89's harness and replace the connectors on the older harness with them. The colors are the same, just strip the wires and put them together.
