rookie ?'s

is this a good starting point for a rookie for $500

Fresh 40 over 350 block 2 bolt main with arp main studs
Bored and honed with torque plate, decked
Brass freeze plugs with clevite cam bearings
Cast crank turned 10/10 with clevite main bearings
Rebuilt rods with arp wavelock bolts and clevite bearings
Speed Pro Hyperutectic flat top pistons with speed pro moly rings
Assembled with all clearances checked

just want to make sure I'm not getting jipped. I'm looking for about 300+hp with heads and intake and carb and exhaust. can this handle that?

Re: rookie ?'s

sounds like its all been done up right. if the machine work was done correctly, that sounds like a good deal to me. Heck, you're talking pretty close to that price in machine work alone, and you're getting a motor with it

Re: rookie ?'s

Yeah it should have no problem handling 300hp. Your only problem will be finding crappy enough stuff to only make that much power.
I put world products heads, roller rockers, comp exteme hydraulic flat tappet cam&lifter kit, timing chain, edelbrock intake&carb as well as headers on a stock short block which according to desktop dyno should be putting out in the neighborhood of 380hp. Fair to say it is putting out a real 300+ hp and holds up fine.

Whoooooaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't know that remember I'm a rookie but it sounds like I'll be buying parts (as I can ) and probably following your setup. that is more than enough HP. but then again can you ever have enough

Re: rookie ?'s

Well I bought it and brought it home she's beautiful. two bolt main, arp main studs lubed bearings cast no. 3970010 the short block is put together and he would not sell his vortec heads but taught me what to look for and what the head numbers should be. this will take some time I don't know where to get them from or how much. is it true that with vortec heads and correct cam this will put out over 4oohp. He gave ph# and email and told me to contact him and he could help me find some.

Re: rookie ?'s

Vortec heads are great for stock castings. Compared to aftermarkets, they are pretty unimpressive. I say this because your plans seem to be oriented to the higher power levels which require a pretty healthy cam matched to the engine system. Vortecs cant take much of a cam without machine work which bumps the cost to nearly that of aftermarkets which dusts vortecs and fits your build plan better
