fuel pump problem
ok, so my name is matt, and i have a 92 camaro z28 with a 305 TPI. i just put in a brand new 350 engine with a carb...took out all emmisions and computer. but im having some problems.
-Because i am not computer controlled anymore, i need a new fuel pump. i did not take out the old one at the tank. i just cut out the factory fuel filter and placed my summit high flow pump there. hooked up to a malloy swich to turn it on, to my dash. NOW when i turn the swich on all i hear is a LOAD winding noise from my pump, but no gas flow. im not sure if i put it in wrong or upside down. please help.

Re: fuel pump problem
That pump's probably not going to like trying to suck fuel through the in-tank pump.
If you didn't want to take out the stock pump, why not just keep it and use a regulator?

Re: fuel pump problem
does the wire come out the top front or the bottem front? in the pick mine is coming out the top....also did you put yours in the same spot
Re: fuel pump problem
Mine is in my 86 1/2 ton, so no not in the same spot. I just went and checked and i think you have it plumbed backwards. My relief valve access plug is on the suction side of my pump. You have yours set up on the pressure side.

Re: fuel pump problem
so i can just swith the hosing or do i have to take it off or turn it? for example..on my pic...should the summit sign be facing the front of the car or back, or that doesnt matter...just the hoses?

Just switching the hosing might be a little sloppy but it will certainly work to double check that it is indeed the problem.
Or you could just turn the pump upside down.

Re: fuel pump problem
You'll kill that pump quick trying to pull fuel through the dead in-tank pump. You really should have used the in-tank pump, and ran a regulator (Mallory 4309) for the carb. You'll have to take that pump out now, or rewire it to run again.
And yes, you have to drop the tank, which means taking out the exhaust, dropping the rear axle as far as you can without breaking/stretching the driver side brake line, removing the tank, and taking the pump out through the top, unless you do the hack and cut an access hole in through the rear trunk.
If it were me, I'd go back, make the in-tank pump work again, and get the correct regulator - much easier than dropping the tank to remove the old pump and make the el-cheapo electric pump you bought work.
Is this car an automatic? If so you'll need geometry correctors for the tranny and a lock-up kit for the torque converter too!

Re: fuel pump problem
yea the pump was deff in the wrong way....it pumps gas but its still so god damb noisy, and camaronewbie, if i was going to use the old pump...how the hell do i wire that...also will that one be strong enough hence i am running a carb. and yes i put in the torq lock up kit. but wth is eometry correctors for the tranny....? also rememeber for the factory fuel pump. i do not have my engine bay wire harness anymore..that means no more relay. but i did hook the new one up with a relay kit from summit.
Re: fuel pump problem
When i bought my truck it had a carbed 350 in it. It originally had a 4.3 but i think it was carbed as well.
I wouldn't worry about pulling through the old pump. Trust me this pump is just plain noisy. I mean people staring at you in a parking lot when you turn the key on noisy. If you have the hi volume (140GPH) like i do you need to run it with a regulator. I run mine with a dead head regulator and it is even worse when its constantly going into relief.

Re: fuel pump problem
i have mine hooked up to a malloy switch on my dash..because i took my ecu out. i have hooked up to the basic holley reg. and to the pump i have a summit relay...but when i hit the switch its always on...so i keep hearing that whiding sound.
Re: fuel pump problem
I wired my pump through a relay to an ignition hot. Its on as soon as the key is. And its always whining. And its always kind of annoying. Then again you know when your pump aint workin. haha
Yeah that holley regulator is a dead head style(non-return) so at idle you will constantly hear the pump loading up as it goes in and out of relief.

Re: fuel pump problem
You can't use a return line with a dead head style regulator. Hence the term "dead head" not to be confused with a regulator that follows around the Grateful Dead. That summit pump has and internal relief valve and so it doesn't require a return line. Your set up is fine. Just noisy, like mine.

Re: fuel pump problem
if i decided to just wire my factory one....will give enough pump for my carb...i dont even know what psi to run at,(in new with carb) and if i do that can i use this reg??????????????
Re: fuel pump problem
It depends on how much power your motor is putting out as to whether your stock pump will keep up. It certainly will under normal driving conditions. Under extended WOT you could run into issues again depending on your power output.
No that regulator will not work with your stock pump. You need a return style regulator.
Run at about 5 psi at idle. Too much and it will push past the needle, overfill the bowl and flood you out. And it doesn't take much, pound or two out.

Re: fuel pump problem
so what should i do? should i keep the summit i bought wth reg and just keep old pump unpluged? or do i hook up factory one....all i know is i the summit one is LOAD. and i have it running all the time..... but my car wont even start right now. everything is new and i might of hooked stuff up wrong....like all my car will do now is crank slow...wont turn over. i hooked up summit hei dist, with a summit box with rev limiter..see i got this car gutted..with factory 305 tpi already out...and just a ruinned harness...so i decided to go 350 carb with out the stuiped ecu. so i had to wire it my self.....so im having some problems.
Re: fuel pump problem
Well you can't exactly return the summit one now anyway, its used.
Cranking slow...sounds like a timing issue. Try disconnecting power to your distributor. If the motor cranks fast then you know your timing is way out. Maybe stabbed the distributor 180° out.
