I must admit, I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to cars. My father recently passed away, and he left me his 1992 RS to give to my son when he's of a responsible age. Sadly, a few years earlier, my uncle passed away and left me his '93 Chevy G20 conversion van, which has a 350 sitting in it. I have no clue about anything else regarding these engines, whether they're big-block, small-block, or any other kind of block. All I know is that the Camaro has a 305, the van has a 350, and I'd love to be able to have these engines swapped.

Getting to the point, is this swap possible? If so, how much should I expect to invest to get both of these vehicles working properly with their swapped engines? What is a ballpark figure I can expect to dish out to have an experienced body shop do this swap for me?

I apologize if this topic has been beaten to death in this forum, I just couldn't find anything that would answer my questions. I'm new to this site, but so far love what I'm seeing, and will definitely recommend it to my son when I hand over the keys to the RS in a few years. Thanks in advance for any and all help provided.

 

It can be done relatively easily, but it gets expensive in a hurry when you have to pay someone else to do it.

 

I'd love to avoid using a mechanic, but with a job this big I have no choice. My dad had a Haynes Repair Manual which I've been using for light maintanence like changing air filters, breather elements, side marker lights, etc., but there's really no way I can handle this on my own. well it is deffinatly possible because i just did the same swap about three weeks ago. getting the motor out of the van is going to be the hardest part it took me and a friend 10 hrs to get it out!!! the rest is easy sailing, for a carbed motor that is. i would go with a new intake and carb if i was you. it would probably save alot of hassel.

 

My buddy says he can help me out for WAY cheaper than a body shop, plus we can drink beers and hang out in the process. He's got something (he says) that will easily get the 350 out of the van, so hopefully that won't be as big of a pain for me as it was for you. Good call with the new intake and carb, though. I was thinking of looking for something high-performance that'll give me a little extra something under the hood. This car is eventually going to my good-looking son in a few years, so I'd like for him to be able to strut his stuff better than I did when I was his age (and showing just how "bad" I was spinning around in my Corsica, lol).

 

Sorry for your losses. It is very possible to do it, like others have said, taking the motor out of the van will be the hardest part. Nothing a few buds can't do over a few weekends.

 

Both the '92 RS and '93 van will have TBI. To put a carb on it would be silly (and illegal).

Emission laws make sense in some areas but the new national law you guys have is simply another diversion from the real issue of pollution. Look at the transport, shipping and offroad/construction industries. Trucks are just starting to see some regulations over the last ten years. Ships and offroad equipment including all mining, forestry, construction ect has absolutely zero. Big cargo ships burn gallons per inch, not per mile, not miles per gallon. And they burn crap almost as thick as tar that needs to be heated for injection. The stuff coming out the stack is just plain nasty. And thats not even touching on factorys, coal burning generator stations ect ect. And for the most part these motors run all the time.

The personal automotive industry contribution to pollution is quite literally a drop in a bucket especially since it has long been the most tightly regulated. Our governments know this and yet they continue to point the finger at the little guy. Thieves and liars.
