A 350 with a 5 speed? Is it bad? Or better!

Ive got a 1988 iroc-z that was a 305 stick, that a past owner had put a 350 in it. It has a whine when you put the clutch in mainly in first gear. It whines when you release it slowly. Could this be that it need a new performace clutch or do i need a new trans to accomadate the 350? Im going to put a 383 in it, Is that too much for that trans?

first you need to find out wheither you have the stock t5 or the better t56 5 speed?the t5 will hold up to a 350 if you dont drive it to hard all the time, but the t56 is a lot more foregiving when it comes to running hard down the road.IMOP if you upgrade to a 383 plan on upgradeing to the t56 as well but thats just my 2 cents.

T-56 is a 6 speed, not a 5 speed - so he DOES NOT have a T-56.

T5 will hold for awhile with a 350 if it's babied. T5 will NOT hold up to a 383 for very long.

You would need to get a T-56 to hold up - it's the 6 speed from a 4th gen. You'll also need new crossmember and some other goodies to put it in your 3rd gen.

is it whineing when your sitting at a stop light or sumthing with your foot on the clutch and the car in gear and makes noise untill the clutch is fully ingaged. if so it could just be a pilot bushing.

Why wont the t-5 trans hold up? Even if i put a performance clutch in it and put some Royal Purple syncromesh in it it still wont hold up to blown mustangs away on a daily basis? What technically will go wrong with the t-5?

It wont hold because its a weak transmission, there is a reason GM never put 350's and T5's together. The clutch and "Royal Purple Syncormesh" wont make a difference.

If you drive reasonably as camaronewbie suggests, the T-5 should last behind a 350 (mine has). In race applications, however, sooner or later say adios.
