Gen VI 502 ram jet valves/lifters

Hello,

I had some noise from lifters and I am up to change now, but I have some questions.

I am not sure if the cam is worn or not, I am adding some pictures, can someone tell me if the cam is OK or not?

One more minor thing, Does the gen VI engines with aluminum heads (gm factory engines) need valve adjustments? Some say that you just need to tighten the bolt until it reaches a stop? Is it correct?

Thanks for the replies...

What you're seeing on the cam lobes is not a problem.

Engongam, please don't think I'm being a jerk, because I like ya, but it was on you to check your rocker adjustment before taking things apart. Now I'm gonna need a pic of the rocker stud, some net-lash types are obvious.
If it's not obviously a net-lash style, then I'll have to type out the procedure for making sure to get it right without damaging anything.

Re: Gen VI 502 ram jet valves/lifters

I checked the valve's and their lashes, all of those stuff were ok, pushrods were able to turn on their centeraxis and were not able to come up, there were no lash... I called some engine people to double tick my observation too=)

I marked everything on the distributor to put things back correctly but I need to rotate the engine to do the valve adjustment, I am thinking of putting back the distributor; with out the cap; and do the rotating procedure, in that way, I will keep the things alligned right?

Re: Gen VI 502 ram jet valves/lifters

I think I confused you. before removing any rockers, you should have tried to tighten one. If you had tried that, and it wouldn't turn any farther, then you would have known for sure it was net-lash. If it had turned more, then you would have known for certain that it was not net-lash.
At this point, your pic is keeping me from seeing if the rocker studs have shoulders on them or not.
Anyway, I never reinstall the dizzy for adjusting the rockers, but if you think it'll help, there's no good reason not to.
go ahead and adjust any one rocker the correct way for traditional Chevy V8s. Then, before doing anything else, try to tighten the rocker nut some more. If it won't go very far, say, less than 360 degrees, then just tighten them all down that way. If it goes more than 540 degrees, then do them all the traditional way.

yeap I tried that.... I was able to turn more than 540 degrees (before taking it apart), they are the traditional rockers=) I will follow the regular procedure right? What do you think about the distributor issue??

I see no harm in it.

Doesn't mean anything to me, but I don't see any need to go look them up, either. You've established that you just use the traditional procedure.

Re: Gen VI 502 ram jet valves/lifters

I did the adjustment according to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89o5r...ext=1&index=40

he takes the 1st piston to the Top Dead Point and then adjust both valves, and than, he rotates the crank quarter round.

But I heared that some big block engines may need to adjust valves with the lifters being empty (not filled with oil). what is the right thing to do? Some say that first you need to adjust the intake of 1st and than exhaust of the 8th, what is the correct prosedure? Am I ok with the way of video's?
