cam identification?
alrightyy. i am currently in the process of rebuilding(more like just buying parts) for a 66 327 short journal for my 82 z. it already has one rebuild on it already, 40 over, hydraluic lifters, new pistons, just gettin edelbrock heads, intake, holley 600cfm carb, roller rockers, comp push rods, carb spacer, and all that fun stuff.. but my real question here is; is there any way any of yall could just give me the rundown on possibly identifying my cam? its a flat tappet, i know that much, it has CMC stamped on it, and at the top its got 274. if you guys could let me know anything, i would really appreciate it, but if not, its all good. thanks a lot, and if ya want, i'll keep ya guys posted.

Re: cam identification?
if you have a micrometer measure the base circle and then the lobe and tell us the difference for the lift of the cam. both intake and exhaust lobes.

Re: cam identification?
You should just buy a new cam that matches your compression and your application. If you can afford Edelbrock heads, you can find $93 for cam and lifters.

Re: cam identification?
and as far as "affording" goes, its more like pushin the limit, so thats why i was curious as to what i could figure out from this cam, cause i dont wanna trash a perfectly good one.

Re: cam identification?
Honestly, all I need to figure compression is whether your pistons are flat-top or dish or dome, and part number of the heads. From there I can get close enough. That cam may have such long duration that it wants to idle at 1200 rpm, and wants 4.10:1 gearing. You just can't know, unless you get a degreeing kit, and figure it all out.
Just because a cam is not worn doesn't make it still serviceable.

I thought you were wanting to know so you could replace the cam. If I'm unsure of what the cam is or its condition I just replace with a new one. I've already had my share of cams that fall apart rendering the engine useless. Trending Topics

awesome. well ya see, im new to all this stuff, so what i remeber from my pistons; they are flat, but have four notches on the top of them. if that helps any.. haha. the cylinder heads are edelbrock 60909 64cc performer heads. http://picasaweb.google.com/10111071...21383772825282

Re: cam identification?
Assuming you choose head gaskets that'll result in an ideal 0.040" piston-to-head clearance, you're right around 10.0:1 That's pretty good, and gives you a lot of freedom with cam selection.

Re: cam identification?
Since it's only a 327, and it's a lame TH350 with a way-too-tall first gear, you definitely need a torque cam. The heads will provide the top-end power. I'd order this: http://www.competitionproducts.com/E...ctinfo/E1029M/ It specs at: 214/214 at 50, 112 lobe sep, 443/443 lift. The idle won't be choppy, racy, or even very attention-getting, but the way it'll pull is far more important. This is a cam that you'll be glad you got, not frustrated with. I've used these kits myself, in my own engines, with great success. You should be over 300 horses, probably peaking around 5000 rpm, so hold first gear to 5500 when racing. Your MPG should average mid teens with that gearing. I'd estimate torque to exceed 350 ft-lbs, probably peaking around 4000 rpm.

Re: cam identification?
I've used that cam and loved it. It leaves the lights with a strong pull in a 3500 lb car.
