What Can I Do To Blow Up My Engine?!?
What Can I Do To Blow Up My Engine?!?
Hi everyone I have a 1990 Iroc with a 350 but I really want to do an LS1 swap but my dad wont let me so I want to know if theres any hope that my engine 180,XXX miles would just "stop working" anytime soon so I have an excuse to do the swap and what I can do to maybe speed it up. I'm hoping it will die around next fall right before I'd have to put it away for the winter anyway.
Thanks

If your dad wont let you, then that means he would be paying for the LS1 swap. I think it would be pretty messed up to purposely blow your motor up so he can shell out 5 grand. And something tells me if you dont know what it takes to destroy a motor, you wont get through an LS swap.

Uhhhh.... I think someone needs to alert your dad to this thread. That is pretty messed up. How about save the money yourself and then you can SELL the L98 and recoupe some money instead of having a worthless boat anchor when you're all done.

This is what's going to happen. You're going to blow that thing up on purpose, ASSUMING your dad is going to magically change his mind and say that he will let you do the swap. But actually what will probably happen is after it blows up, you're dad is gonna look for a cheap engine, one that's easy to find, because he wants to fix it as cheaply as possible. You're going to get stuck with a 305TBI because he is going to find one for $300 or so, and you're gonna be freakin' pissed. And we will all be laughing lol

I have an idea - why not just drive it into a bridge - then talk daddy into a 2010?
GROW UP!!! You obviously don't have the maturity level needed to own ANY car, let alone a LS1 equipped Camaro.

that would be a good way of getting your dad to beat the living hell out of you , it's usually obvious it you intentionally blow your car up. Having said that drive in 1st gear till it throws a rod out the side of the block. Good luck with that a$$ woopin.
Re: What Can I Do To Blow Up My Engine?!?
Haha this was more of a joke but I'm pretty sure I don't disrespect my third gen because if I did I don't think I would be spending all the time that I am restoring it and also "daddy" isnt buying me sh*t I have a job and am doing all the work and paying for everything the only thing he paid for was my $80 title transfer and that was my only 16th birthday present. I do want an LS1 and I know how much I would be spending but I would definitely keep the 350 and not destroy it and one day rebuild it as a 383 and drop it in something else.

Keep your 350 and make it better, you have a lot to work with.

Lol. Sorry for coming off so hard. Should have figured you were kidding. A stock 350 may or not be hard to kill. Depends on how well it was assembled and how good the oil pump is. It may run a long time at max rev before it takes a dive. Better to save it though. Build an LS1 eating 355.

Hope daddy gets you a Geo Metro, after he knocks you stupid for blowing you car up. Oh wait...He wouldn't hafta hit you at all for you to be stupid, would he?
Re: What Can I Do To Blow Up My Engine?!?
I honestly was kidding because I know small block Chevys run forever and I'm expecting at least 100,000 more miles out of my car before a serious problem occurs...at least I'm hoping so because I just sanded the whole thing to bare metal and ripped the whole interior out and I need to pay for that right now.

I don't blame you for wanting that LS1 swap, it's definitely worth every penny. Just do it the right way, save your money and do it without pulling one over on your dad.
You'll be happy in the end. I did the 6.0L LS swap, cam-only the thing put down 420rwhp/407ft.lb. That's with stock imported heads, stock unported throttle body, stock GM intake manifold, stock displacement. It's truly a cam only car with a nice piece from Texas Speed. That's something the SBC guys can only dream of using stock untouched parts.

Re: What Can I Do To Blow Up My Engine?!?
Ooooorrr you can have me borrow your IROC (without your dad knowing) and then I can pull your engine to keep for myself (I wanna swap in an L98 into my TA) and you can take your camaro back saying that it was stolen and stripped out, then you'll have an excuse to swap that LS engine in.
But seriously, I think you'd be better off possibly throwing on a few bolt-ons to make the L98 more interesting in the mean time. The 350 is a good engine; it was running 14s from the factory (which isn't mind blowing, but not by any means bad) and it won't take much to make it really fast. Then you can have some more time to save up some cash to swap in a mean LS. And I'm sure your dad has a good reason to stop you from swapping in that engine. May I ask what kind of budget you have for the swap?

Re: What Can I Do To Blow Up My Engine?!?
Haha but eventually I'll just get bolt-ons for my engine I was never gonna blow it up its a long story that started with an argument with my friend over what engine will run longer no matter what you do to it a small block chevy or the engine in his 90 somethin toyota truck. And the LS swap wouldn't be for a while anyway because right now i only have a couple gs for my car and I need to get the paint/interior straightened out first so that puts me back to 0 or negatives

If that LS swap isn't gonna be for a while, then I'd be very concerned with keeping a 180,000 mile 350 running well rather than blowing the sucker up. And its good that you're putting the money toward making the car look good. Ladies like how it looks, they don't care what's under the hood... of the car lol.
Plus who cares if your friend's engine is better... I'm sure his toyota's frame is swiss cheese with rust, whereas you drive a camaro.
Good luck with whatever you plan on doing! Re: What Can I Do To Blow Up My Engine?!?

Re: What Can I Do To Blow Up My Engine?!?
I probably went with the single most expensive way to do an LSx swap. I bought a 6.0 iron block off craigslist that I thought was good to go, but it ended up being a '00 block which unfortunately has a different crankshaft than the '01+ blocks, so I had to swap out cranks in order to use a 4th gen fbody transmission. So while I was in there, I had the whole inside of the block replaced, all the bearings, an LS2 corvette crank, forged pistons and rods, new cam, along with a new valve train. I bought the heads seperately because the '00 block had iron heads and the '01+ have aluminum. I've got about $5,000 in the engine alone, but the entire swap from start to finish was in the ballpark of $14,500-15,000. I did a lot of extra stuff that's not needed to do a bare bones swap though, like tubular k-member, aftermarket torque arm and cross member, etc.
