Cam choice...

I have an 87 Iroc-z28 auto with the 305tpi engine, I'm currently about to start fitting a 350 as I'd like more power and the current 305's a bit tired and if I'm going to build up a fresh motor for it I'd rather build a 350..

I'm keeping the tpi system and keeping with the stock 350 prom as i often use the car for my commute and it sits in traffic ect plus it's great on fuel which is important as 'gas' costs about $10 a gallon over here..

Thing is 350 chevs aren't that common over here but I have found one for the right price but it's out of a boat so it has a very mild cam fitted, which I'll definitely want to upgrade..

I don't want to upset the computer and i don't want to have have to upgrade the torque converter but i'd like to get a performance boost over the stock setup if possible, but i'm not looking for big power just nice streetable grunt..

What do you guys reccomend?

Looking for brand specifications and supplier info please

Re: Cam choice...

Actually, boats tend to get healthier cams than passenger cars, plus looser clearances internally.
If the 350 is an '87-up block, then the RamJet 350 cam will give you the best torque up to 3500 rpm, and pull hard through 4500. It's also very computer-friendly. And good for mpg.

Re: Cam choice...

638 blocks are '87-up, so you can use the roller lifters, dogbones, spider, pushrods and thrust plate from your 305. Forget the marine cam, the RJ cam is only $135.

Re: Cam choice...

okey doky...

popped one of the rocker covers off today and it was clean as a whistle inside no sludge black stuff or oil residue, just nice clean lightly oiled metal so this made me happy..

But the head numbers were 14096217 which google tells me is:

14096217 = 350 285HP, Crate motor, 1.94-1.5, 72º intake bolts, 64cc, center bolt VC

Soooo are these any good? 285bhp sounds nice! would this be measured with a 4 barrel carb? if so would my tpi improve it or strangle it?

What do we think to the cam now? still change it out? if so do i fit the roller lifters from my 305 still?
