Re: so.. who makes the best crate engines?

Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of crate engines. I'd recommend going to a local, reputable machine shop, there's no good reason not to.

I've had one experience with crate engines... D&J Machine, AKA "Tuff Dawg Engines" on ebay and online. The motor sure looked pretty, price seemed reasonable, especially compared to other similar crate engines. But it blew a head gasket after only a couple hours of runtime... Hmmm. I wasn't pleased, to say the least. Maybe I just had really bad luck

I've been running a GM crate for several years. Recommended.

You have to decide which is more important to you, the bang, or the buck.

I knew a guy in the early 80's who said his CRX would out-run anything that got better gas mileage. Well, think about it...

Re: so.. who makes the best crate engines?

Just so ya know... That 510 horsepower 350 you see from ATK is with nitrous. Refilling nitrous bottles gets very expensive after a while

If you really want that much power (Personally, I don't think you need that much, I'd bet $$ you'd be happy with 400, especially for a street car), I'd look into bigger inch small blocks, like a 383 or a 400 block

--And Don't forget to budget for the rest of the drivetrain, to handle power levels like that. T5's are notoriously easy to break stock, and 700R4's won't like 500 HP either. Your 10 bolt rear end will hate life too. $$$$
