PULLING ENGINE AND TRANS TOGETHER ????

Has anyone had any luck pulling a 5.7 tpi engine and transmission together from 87 iroc. The car is on jackstands fully extended, maybe 16 inches off the ground.

Yup. Thats how most people do it. I find it easier if you leave the front of the car on its wheels, and get the rear of the car as high as you safely can on jackstands.

The car is completely stripped except engine and tranny, is it a problem that the wheels are removed?

no not really, but if you are just using a engine hoist aka cherry picker, the front of the car may be too high to get the engine and trans over the radiator support and out of the car. Its best to have the car at ride height when you pull the engine out the top. A balance bar for the hoist to adjust and level the engine and trans will be a great help too.

Thanks guys, i will be using an engine hoist. I will try lowering the front jack stands, and keeping the rear stands fully extended. I was concerned that there wouldnt be enough room to tilt the transmission down if the front of the car was to low.

once the trans comes off the crossmember, it will drop a lot, makes quite a mess too. Maybe consider a large catch pan to catch all the ATF

Re: PULLING ENGINE AND TRANS TOGETHER ????

Any suggestions on where to fasten the chains to engine, there are no hooks or any thing on the block or intake manifold.

Re: PULLING ENGINE AND TRANS TOGETHER ????

I installed my own hooks in the intake manifold bolts for removal and installation, then removed them once I set it back in. When I removed my engine and tranny together, I had to put a little bit of weight on the front end to get the engine to clear that last little bit, same for re-installing. It was resting on its wheels.
