Hi i got a 92 parts car that im thinking bout pulling the engine to fix. Never pulled an engine before. Im gonna go buy an engine hoist. Id like to attempt this tomorrow. Its a 305 with 5 speed. What do i have to do first. whats the easiest way to pull the engine. how long should it take? thanks

 

if its a 5 speed car should be alot easyer than auto take the trans and exhust out first than unplug whatever you need and if is a parts car i would take the nose off cuz the engine hoist arm dont extend to clear the nose

 

I use a 2-ton lift and a Big Red Leveler.

 

dunno what hoist you used but i just pulled a v6 from my bird and it didnt come close to hitting the nose.

 

maybe this small image can give you an idea of things



Remove the Ypipe
disconnect radiator lines
remove throttle cable (will be running through driver side firewall)
Gas lines
you pulling trans with the motor or no?
Misc plugs from the main harness

just off top of my head

took me about 3 hrs to pull my v6, a good 2 hrs was playing around with the Y pipe and torque arm

 

i use a regular 3 ton engine hoist, i see that you pull the v6 out of a bird i know on both my 86 and 92 camaro the engine hoist touch the bumper

 

im gonna try and remove just the engine no trans. dont know if thats easier?

 

i havent pulled a v8 out of an f body, only 2 v6's, so am not sure if theres a difference. I would think the V6 would be farther back in the bay then a V8, but I could be wrong. I dont have a picture of the engine hoist, but i know the legs and arm exstended enough where it left me about a foot of room between bumper and hoist, ill take a picture when am putting the new motor in. I believe the nose of a bird is longer then a camaro, which is why am stunned yours hit.

should be easier i would imagine, a 5 speed trans is ALOT smaller then a 700r4, it sucks trying to get the bolts out of the 700r4. Just takes some elbow grease, few bloody knuckles, and acouple F bombs before you seperate the two lol. WD-40 the Y pipe bolts, engine and trans bolts before removal to make it easier for you.

I think the only wires i had to disconnect from the motor were 5 or 6.

 

Everyone has different preferences. I like to take the motor out with the trans still hanging on to it. Haven't had a motor out of a third gen yet, but I suppose this is the way I would do it.

 

i think sence you have a t5 is easyer to unbolt the trans from the bell housing and pull it out than lower the car back on its wheels so you dont have to have the engine that high and risk droping it iknow this cuz i did it but like every one is saying here is the way you think you can get it. oh by the way if you have a 700r4 is alot easyer to unbolt the crossmember and lower the trans till you have room to stick a long extension about 3 ft or so just make sure you dont lower it so much that you hit the dist

 

Had the motor out of my 91 a few times very easy to do with out trans. Total time from start to stand is fairly quick.

Prepare engine stand, put car on jack stands, disconnect battery, remove distributor cap, put a jack under the trans, unbolt and remove exhaust (y-pipe), remove flexplate cover, remove bolts from flexplate to trans, unbolt and remove cross member, lower jack down to tilt motor and trans assembly, with long extensons and 9/16 swivel socket remove belhousing bolts, jack trans back to level position, remove motor mount bolts, disconnect starter wires, knock sensor, oil pressure sensor, remove fan shroud and fan, remove harness from drivers passenger side of motor, remove air conditioner compressor and tie up to the side, remove power steering pump and tie to the side, fix chain to lift rings on intake manifold, slowly lift and wiggle motor out of place, disconnect wires that were missed, lift the rest of the way and enjoy!

I also have never needed to remove the nose of my car to get engine out with a cherry picker type hoist....

 

I never had an issue with my hoist pulling the 305 out of my 83 bird and even while i mocked my 454 in and out a half dozen times...i wasnt even close to the nose. from snap on YA778 Engine Hoist, Foldable, 2 ton

 

I just pulled the 305 from my 91 last month.. You need one of those adjustable chain falls for your cherry picker, it's a threaded rod, with a loop that can be adjusted to change the angle of the engine.. I couldn't have done mine without it.

 

All you need is a engine hoist to lift it out, i've done it many times...

 

well looks like im the only one that has the problem of my engine hoist hitting my bumper i guess time to up grade. thanks omerta88 for the part number

If your picker is too short, jack the front end up, remove the front tires, and roll it in from the side, I've had to do this and it works just fine....

 

No problem the best thing about that picker is the remote resevior so you can stand next to the car while lifting....it helps for the odds and ends you dont see till the motors coming out.

 

I went to Harbor Freight and got a hoist. It was too short & hit the bumper. A friend let me borrow his larger hoist. It is about 18" longer & clears the nose on my 92.

third gens are cake if you ever did a swap in a c4 vette..

 

so much easyier to drop it out from the bottom.. k member and all just 6 bolts and the steering box idler arm and the wires and fuel lines and down it comes.. never will i ever pull it out threw the top again..
