Re: big block
could i possibly get this? and bore it out to a 496? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DRT-31273444/
which would be my best bet in the price range of that one.. yet still have room to add stuff?.. theres alot on there..
trying to stick to the 2-4000$ price range..

Re: big block
Nothing wrong with a Big M block but if your budget to build a BBC is $2-4000, an aftermarket block is going to eat up a huge chunk of that.
That particular Big M block is a 4.500" bore. A standard 454, 4" stroke crank will make it a 509. Sticking a 4.25" stroke crank makes it a 540 which is what I use. The block can easily be bored out .100 or .120" over to make a 555 or 565.
Depending what you plan to build, your budget may get you a real nice complete short block. It you're going to pick all aftermarket components, you better budget at least $10,000

Re: big block
Cheeeeepest place would probably be yerbasic local machine shop.
Any stock 454 block in decent shape (no excessive core shift, not rusted through) will do that. All it takes is .060" over.
The same engine in only .030" over is 489. Not worth the extra 7 cubes IMO unless the block has already gone .030" and needs more.

Re: big block
I've still got a few old production blocks in the garage. One is still unbored but threw a rod so it needs 2 sleeves. It would make a good street replacement engine. The other 2 blocks were bored .070" making them 469 cid.
When I was looking for a new block to build my 540, there were a few choices. I liked the Dart block a whole lot better than the Merlin block.

Re: big block
Better casting designs. Stronger casting designs.
Walk through some drag racing pits some day and see how many Dart blocks there are to Merlin blocks. More racers will prefer the Dart block.
