bought a new stroker, one piece or two how do i tell?

I bought a new 383 from a guy who I now can't get in touch with...it needs a starter and flywheel. He sent me an email a long time ago, with some specs. Forged eagle crank and pistons,2.02/1.60 valves, my cam specs are at home, but it has a mild cam. Dual edlebrock 500 cfm carbs...I know this info really isn't helpful, but I need to find out if it is externally balanced, or internally. Also the 1 or 2 piece rear main seal...how can I tell? I really need to get this project rolling, so please let me know what I can do. I'm not a mechanic but am mechanically inclined and have some tools. Please help...thanks

Take the oil pan off, if the gasket goes all the way around in 1 piece it is a 1 piece rms, if it is 2 separate pieces it is a 2 piece rms.

What happens if it is a 2 pce rms engine fitted with an aftermarket 1 pce gasket like this one?
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FEL-1884R/

In any case, stock a 2 pce crank engine has 4 pieces making up the the oil pan gasket

Could have problems without details.
If one pce crank should be stock, external at rear/ neutral at front but plenty of the cheaper stroker kits use the 400 balance setup which is true external.
They need a weighted flywheel and balancer

Re: bought a new stroker, one piece or two how do i tell?

Thanks a ton vettoz. Any idea of how heavy the flywheel should be? It does already have the balancer....and, this is probably a real stupid question, but hell; my crank flange is hard to see on my engine stand, but it appears to be like, an oblong shape? Just a weird looking paralellagram. What are my odd that he used the kit you talked about? He never specified that much on the crank. Now I'm kicking my own a$$ cause I jumped at a good deal and don't know everything about it. Lesson learned.

Re: bought a new stroker, one piece or two how do i tell?

This is a two-piece RMS crank

You would have this part if your 2-piece crank was adapted to fit a 1-piece block (I might be a little incorrect on this one.)

This is the seal housing for a factory 1-piece RMS crank (note the larger size of the seal than the 1-piece conversion):

Your best bet for finding out what you need for a weighted flywheel is to call Eagle.

The 2-piece RMS cranks have notches in the back of the mounting flange, the one-piece RMS cranks are perfectly round in the back. This is the reason for the difference in the flywheel balance weights.

It's not a matter of how heavy but how the flywheel is balanced to suit the crank style being used
As noted above ;
2 pce RMS engines have the balance weight as part of the crank flange so they have a neutral balance flywheel.( exp 400's)
With the round 1 pce RMS crank flange , there is nowhere for the balance weight so the weight was added to the flywheel as shown in pic below

If he can be sure the Eagle crank is forged then it is int balance.
http://www.summitracing.com/search/M...?keyword=eagle

But if he got ripped off and it is the cheaper Eagle cast stroker crank it will be ext ( 400 ) balance

Who knows? Eagle might just be able to help you identify your crank too.

I know my scat crank has a couple of different numbers stamped, etched, and otherwise marked in various places on it.

from a quick google search:
one way is to look at the flash marks, forged crankshafts can be identified by the wide flash marks running the full lenght of each throw. cast-iron crankshafts have a much narrower flash marks. like for instance , a cast crankshaft would have a flash mark 1/4 maybe 3/8 inch wide. forged crankshaft would have a flash mark 1/2 to 9/16 + wide. like double....

Yes! It looks like the piece you posted. (the 400 balance plate) I found mine is a 2 piece rms but the balance plate isn't as long as the one you listed... do they have all different weights? Where should I start with this weighted flywheel? Thanks for all your help fellas.

The balance plate corrects the 400 crank balance so you can run a regular neutral balance 2 pce flywheel
Having said that the only Eagle stroker crank listed as using 400 style external balance is a cast crank ( see links I posted above ) so maybe yours is not the forged crank you were told you have?
See if you can get some numbers off the crank counterweights to identify exactly what you have
