my dampner wont go on??
ok i have a 1973 sbc 400 and im trying to put my new harmonic dampner on and it wont go on all the way. it needs to be about another rib and a half over so the belt lines up right. whats wrong. i have baked the thing to 450 degrees for an hour and used refrigernat to cool the crank to make it colder. and it still wont go on.. and it is the right balancer and the crank is clean and the keys arent smashed

Very common with aftermarket dampers.
You need to hone its bore with a brake cyl hone or the like to get it to fit. You'll find the hone itself doesn't do well; but if you wrap some wet sandpaper around it and lube it with trans fluid, it works pretty good. You'll want about 120 grit or so and it will take a while.
Some (notably ATI) even tell you in their printed instructions to do so.

You were beating on it rather than using a proper damper install tool?

Re: my dampner wont go on??
Thats the absolute wrong way to put it on. Never should a hammer be involved in the process. (Unless youre beating it up after romoving it from the car for stress relief)
