305 to 350 Starter issue

Hi everyone.

I swapped my engine this winther but now after 6 month of work, the starter wont crank... the gear go out and jam on the flywheel and it don't turn the flywheel.

Flywheel is from my stock 1987 305 Carbed
Engine is from 1987 chevy van 2500
Starter is from my 305 engine.
transmission is a 87 and up Th700r4 from my Camaro

I'm planning to buy a starter from a chevyvan ...

Good idea?

Make sure all your connections are good and tight. If it doesn't want to crank you could take the starter off and take it into someplace like Oreilly Auto Parts. They can bench test the starter for you. Did the motor turn over by hand before?

The connection to the starter are all good and cleaned... I use a charger with crank assist mode to power the starter.

The engine is rotating by hand (with Sparks plug on it).

My old starter won't turn anymore, so we use an old Cavalier starter to crank it, maybe the starter is not enought powerfull ?

I'm planning to buy brand new starter for a chevyvan 2500 (56$)

OK here's the news :

I have a 158 Flexplate and a brand new 1987 Camaro starter. The gear still jam on the flywheel and spin really slowlly like the starter is not enought powerfull.

I re-re-re-rechecked every wiring and everything is OK.

My block is from 1987 Chevyvan

Did you verify your starter power wire hasn't been toasted on the exhaust?

What kind of voltage are you showing at the starter connection?

Was the hand turning done before or after the motor was installed?

I connected the battery charger directly to the starter, did not check the voltage.

All wire are brand new, the engine ground was cleaned like dishes....

If hand turning means that you put a ratchet on the crank pulley and rotate the engine by hand, it was done berfore and after the motor was installed.

We hand turn the engine to count the tooth on the flywhell yesterday and it was done by a girl.... so I think it rotate enought "freelly".

The engine is almost completly rebuilt (new cam, head, valves.. etc..)

Re: 305 to 350 Starter issue

Try it with a good battery instead of the charger. Your ground wires on the car may be good, but if the ground on your charger isn't getting a good connection it could be all the difference.

As far as the starter gear jamming, did you check the gap between the starter and flywheel teeth to see if the starter needed to be shimmed when you installed it?

Charger would not provide enought Amp to the starter..

Tryied with a new battery, crank without problem..

Thx
