305 TBI performance upgrade
305 TBI performance upgrade
I have a good condition '88 Camaro 305 engine that I took out of my son's Camaro to put a 350 in.
I have an old Chevy 6cyl pickup that I would like to restore as an old shop truck. I'd like to put the 305 into it to give it a little pep and a better sound, nothing crazy.
My question is: since I will turn it into a carbureted engine without any computer hookup, I was thinking of adding a mild cam and headers w/Glasspacks. Does anyone have a cam# they used that can use the roller lifters and provide a nice lope?
I believe it has the base heads, not HO.
Remember I only want this for an infrequently used "play" truck with 350 automatic. I'll probably just get the heads cleaned and new valve guides because it smoke a little, at idle only.
Thanks

When you have the heads done have them clearance for the cam.

You should be able to find a used ZZ4 cam for a lot less than that. It probably won't produce that much lope, though.
The thing about TBI heads is they have good exhaust flow, but ain't worth a hoot on the intake side above .45" lift. So all of that ZZ4 motion between .450" and .474" will be wasted.
Rather than waste your time & money working over those heads, see if you can get your hands on a set of 416's or 601's.
