What is going on here??? Belt help!
Hello,
Well, I am in the process of finishing up a build and was bolting everything back onto the front of the engine when I noticed something odd. The power steering pump is on the drivers side, and it has a place above it where the alternator appears to fit into, however... The wires coming from the loom that go to the alternator are on the passenger side.
Now, when I bought the car, I drove it home once before taking everything out and never drove it again. I am wondering how the hell the guy who sold it to me even had the alternator hooked up if the wires are on the passenger side. Either way, I now have no idea how to setup my belt for this or what exactly I should do.
I am running an edelbrock 1406 carb on a crate 350 if it matters. My pulleys will be, water pump, crank, power steering, alternator and then the little tensioner pulley. I am lost here so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You mention tensioner pulley - is this a serpentine belt setup? If so, the alternator on a serpentine belt car is on driver side with P/S pump - A/C and smog pump on pass side. If using a serp setup, you cannot eliminate the A/C without using a delete pulley. The smog pump can be eliminated following this guide www.thirdgen.org/serpentine
ALSO NOTE - the serpentine setup requires a reverse rotation water pump.

Well, I still cannot figure out how to even hook up the alternator if the wires for it are on the passenger's side. And is there really no other way to run a belt other than going with a delete pulley? I don't care if it is serpentine or not, I am willing to use a different setup if I can.

If not using a serpentine setup, you don't need a delete pulley.
What year is the car - that always helps. And what was the original engine/induction?

Any thoughts on the alternator wiring? And what other options do I have other than serpentine? I don't know much about belt setups. The car is a 92 camaro. Not sure what was in it originally. I got it with an engine from a silverado in it.

Mine is a 1992 also. I did this - not a cheap alternative, buit I'm very happy with the results ....
I snagged the balancer pulley from a 1987 car - they had a 1/2 and 1/2 setup where the alternator had a flat belt, and the P/S had a V-belt. I then used an old-school alternator bracket off the shelf from Autozone ($30 for chrome) and mounted a pre-1988 alternator on pass side (where in my old-school world it should be anyway). No smog pump, and no A/C. I then bought a March P/S pump bracket from Summit ($105 + shipping), and used a pre-1988 P/S pump with it. Finally, I replaced the water pump with a pre-1988 pump. Then, I ran a flat belt from crank to w/p to alternator, and a V-belt from crank to P/S to w/p. No matter which of the two belts ever breaks, I always have water pump running (can drive a ways with no alternator, and don't "need" P/S in an emergency).
Like I said - not an economical solution since all three components have to be replaced along with new bracketry, but it got rid of the fugly serp brackets and cleaned my bay up alot. New P/S pump with resevoir about $75, new alternator about $75, new w/p about $50, alt bracket $30, March P/S pump bracket $120. But all three componets HAVE to be swapped - 1992 w/p rotates wrong for a non-serp setup, 1992 P/S pump has wrong mounting holes for the March bracket, and 1992 alternator also has wong mounting holes (1992 alternator has holes at 12 oclock and 8 oclock, old school brackets need mounts at 12 oclock and 6 oclock).
IF you decide to change to ANY other than factory P/S pump bracket, don't waste your time with anything else but March or Billet Specialties - there's a thousand on ebay that "look" identical, but do not work for one reason or another - I've been there and wasted my time and money trying to save a buck on that junk.

Re: What is going on here??? Belt help!
Thank you for the reply. Sounds like a nice setup but I definitely don't have the cash for all that. Just trying to figure out the quickest way to get this thing running as soon as possible! So if anyone has any economical ideas, please let me know. I have spent so much time and money on this build and I cannot shell out much more. Just want it done before it starts getting cold. I am already more than $5,000 in to this thing!

Mine is carbed. Yes, mine would look like that if I had the AC delete pulley that you appear to have there. But the damn alternator wires are on the passenger side even though the bracket for the alternator is on the driver side! I don't know what to do about this...
Re: What is going on here??? Belt help!
well my wires come from the pass side and crossover. if your wires are 2 short then get a soldering iron, heat shrink, and some wire and extend them. mine was carbed at one time also. still used all the same parts for the belt.
Re: What is going on here??? Belt help!
Yes, I think I may do that. Do you know what gague wire I would need? Also, is it totally necessary to get an AC delete pulley or can I complete the belt loop without it? Thanks.
Re: What is going on here??? Belt help!
14 to 16 gauge for signal wires. 10 or 8 gauge for battery wire. and you will have to do a search on no a/c belt routing.

Thanks a lot. I suppose i will try and see if I can mount my alternator down below there but if it doesn't fit then I guess I'll have to extend the wires (pain in the ***) and then get the ac delete pulley.
