Which Oil Sending Unit?
Which Oil Sending Unit?
So I dropped a crate 350 with a 700r4 into my 1992 camaro. I bought the sending unit for a 92, but the threads are too thick and do not fit into the hole above the oil filter where it normally would have gone in the stock motor. I am so close to starting her up but I need this one last part and can't seem to find it!
I have heard of a place near the distributor where it goes on some cars, but not sure if it would work for me. If anyone knows, please help me out and explain how I would connect it as well, considering I have the clip for it from the original motor which hangs down near the filter and I would not be able to use that anymore.

Re: Which Oil Sending Unit?
You can use a '89+ Vette style one with the smaller 1/8"NPT threads
Airtex # 1S6592
http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Airtex-1S659...tch-/74859052#
The shaft on Vette unit is not as long as your F-Body one so will require a short 1/8" to 1/8" M/F adapter to space it out as the sensor nut fowls on the block casting .
The oil hole at top rear of block is same small 1/8" size so you would need a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter and some fittings to mount the one you have now there like the L98 Vettes do

Re: Which Oil Sending Unit?
What sort of a connector does that use? Is it the same plug as the 3 prong one in my 92 camaro now? Also, I hope there will be enough room for it there by the distributor, not much clearance. :/ Thanks a lot for that info though. Much appreciated.

How sure are you that you're putting it in the right hole?
Re: Which Oil Sending Unit?
I had to laugh when I first read that. But seriously, I am pretty certain I am trying the right one. There is only one other hole I can see near the oil filter and that one is way too small. The one I am trying is just barely too small for the threads on the sending unit I have, although the wiring plug does fit into it perfectly. I was assuming it was because the engine is not the stock engine and maybe something has changed.
Re: Which Oil Sending Unit?
Wow... Haha, thanks guys I figured it out. It wasn't the right hole after all. There was another that was very hard to see and I originally overlooked it because it had a plug in it. Got the plug out and put the sending unit in. Although it didn't quite screw in all the way, but I got it as tight as I could.

The threads are tapered, it won't bottom out on anything.
What did you seal the threads with?

I have heard not to seal the threads with tape or rtv from several people so I didn't use anything other than the white thread sealer that came on the unit itself. I just hope I got it in far enough because it got real tight and then I didn't want to crack it so I stopped.
