Re: Skip white performance 427
I called them up. Talking to them encouraged me NOT to buy the kit.He right away tried to sell me a whole engine then prceeded to tell me they almost got a supercharge 427 to make 600 hp! Um should be doing that without FI. I asked about the deck on the motor and he was not sure what they are decked at. Kinda of a big deal don't ya think.
Any way thats my take. I went with Ohio Crankshaft. I went and visited there shop and talked to Chris. All in all pretty cool guys. Have not started the motor yet but we will see.

Re: Skip white performance 427
I've bought a few items from him without complaint, but it's all been Chinese knockoff stuff.
I personally would be leary of an entire engine kit,as anyone who would sell cheap knockoff stuff, would likely deal in seconds or rejected parts as well.
Just my thoughts.

Re: Skip white performance 427
That's good to know. Defiantly don't want to risk spending 4 grand plus to build a hackjob motor. Kind of seemed too good to be true when I was looking At it. I might have to go lsx then.

Re: Skip white performance 427
Have you looked into Carl Hinkson of CNC Blocks NE? I've read good things about him. I thinking of using him to build a 420 SBC with a Dart SHP block. He has done a lot of these recently and likes the blocks. Seems he charges around $1,800 to ship a fully machined Dart SHP block. Figure another $1,200 - $2,000 for a rotating assembly installed. His website has been under construction for awhile so best bet is email or call.
At those prices an lsx swap gets more interesting. Also, it seems a 427 out of a normal deck SBC is hard to do as you end up with a small cam. I'm looking to go 3.875" on the stroke instead of 4" to get a 420 ci engine.

Re: Skip white performance 427
You sir,are incorrect.Probe Pistons are made in Tennessee, which if you have ever seen a globe,is NOT in China. They are great pistons, only someone who has never inspected a set of them would say otherwise.
Re: Skip white performance 427
I report what is in the trades as a bases as the truth once. Please knock off the childish sarcasm.I don't debate.Skirt sizes vary alot on apond inspection.Found one set with three pistons having hair line cracks.Certainly not Mahle or Wisco.Cheap junk priced as cheap junk.

Re: Skip white performance 427
Probe pistons are good stuff, try randomly measuring some they will all measure bout the same unlike some of the more popular names. Good for the $
Highly recommended.
Skips an alright guy he sells to a certain crowd though.
Youre not going to get any kind of quality stroker motor for 4k esp. a 427
Figure 2x that.
600hp is a tough nut to crack on most NA smallblocks harder than you think.

It's WISECO.Probe pistons are quality products,UPON inspection.Sofa has had you pinned as an internet expert for a while,I'd have to agree at this point.

You just can't believe all you read from the glossy ads bud.As I said, not big on debates.I tell you once what we have found and the rest is up to you. Re: Skip white performance 427
To be fair about this the speed industry used to be about the best you could get.Because of customer demands it has become the cheapest imported parts run by false fronted shell companies. The facts are still the same. You do get exactly what you pay for and in some cases alot less. The ad campaigns budgets have grown larger than the materials costs just to convince guys of something that isn't.

Check out www.cmengines.com. They got some nice engines for super cheap and I've never heard a bad word about them. Everyone I have talked to has loved their purchase and I have also had positive experiances with them just in getting info from them. Have a good one.
Re: Skip white performance 427
I HAD THE SAME EXP WITH SKIP WHITE ONLY WORSE GOT SUCKED INTO A DEAL WITH NO PART NUMBERS AND GOT BOTTOM DOLLAR PIECES HE STATED 600 HP BUT SCAT SAYS 500 AND THE RODS SAID PC SO I THOUGHT PRO COMP SCAT AND GOT CHINESE MADE PRO COMP ELECTRONIC RODS THAT HE SAID (I BEAM) WOULLD GO TO 550 THEY SAID TO ME 475 MAX SO THE NUMBERS ARE ALL WRONG ....BUT I TOOK THE NEXT STEP I HAVE LEARNED MY LESSON JUST MY OPINION BE CAREFUL .... Have used several of the 383 kits w/ Scat crank,Probe pistons, etc. They have been good kits w/ 0 major problems.Parts measured out good & balance was good as well.

Re: Skip white performance 427
I bought some ProComp heads from them. Ok stuff but I won't be using them on my current build. Looked at their 427's but decided to build locally. If I was going to buy a crate 427 I would go with TriStar engines.
The real world cost for me to build a 421CI small block with Dart block, Callies crank/rods and AFR heads is $9k and I got some "deals" to get there. I know "builders" have mass production and buying power but I can't see how they can offer a motor for $7k without cutting a lot of corners.
If I were doing it all over I would seriously consider the LSX swap. Maybe a little more money in the end but the design is a lot better and emissions are acheavable without all the EGR and AIR appendiges. Just a thought.

Re: Skip white performance 427
I bought my 406 from them. Stick with shortblock assy if you do go through them. Like mentioned above, the heads and intake are cheap chinese garbage. I DID buy the long block, regretfully and ended up selling the upper end because i didnt know. I then bought some nice AFR's with a Vic Jr. Intake. Ive beat the crap out of the block and it seems solid! Racing to 6500 without any concern.
If its going on a 87 & up, serpentine system wont bolt to the accessory bolt holes on their heads anyway. Also, determine whether or not their motor would produce enough vacuum. Power brakes needs that. I had to buy a vacuum pump because my motor didnt produce enough.

As far as vacuum is concerned, I wish cam companies and "magazine" builds would list the idle rpm and vacuum at idle for various combos. Had one expert tell me a 256/260 @.050 HR cam on 113lsa in my 421 would operate power brakes. I am a little suspicious of that one. Variables like manual vs auto, idle rpm and what you consider acceptable all come into play. I had a combo that would operate the brakes ok when first applied but the assist would lessen as the brakes were re-applied. Like at a stop light or when inching forward. Some drivers can tolerate less assist than others.

Re: Skip white performance 427
Sometimes I wish I would have gone with the 427, but then I look at the fact I just ran an 11.9, with a full tank of gas. A half second quicker I have to put in a roll cage, no thanks. 11.9 street car is fine with me.
