Okay I give up I need help!

So I bought a 1984 Trans am for $500. It had a bad trans. Sounds simple right. I changed the trans got it running and well it had some issues.

So here is what was done to it before I got it. Someone did a lt1 swap on it, just the short block. Kept the oem heads, intake and carb. I am not sure but it looked like they took a hammer to the carb and intake so I changed them. It has a nice oem quadrajet on it and a rpm performer. Also they deleted the smog pump egr and O2 sensors.

So here is what the girl is doing. She has high and low idle issues no matter what I do. Also some hesitation. Its having some lock up issues with the trans to. I have to put it in nutrel at stops or she chugs and dies.

This is my first third gen and I am not used to the 80's engineering.

Please help!!

Well what is your fuel pressure, and do you know what trans it is?

Does it have an electrical torque converter clutch switch? The dieing at a stop is a torque converter issue.

Check for vacuum leaks.

Re: Okay I give up I need help!

Looks like your tan wire with a black line on it will be your TCC wire. Personally, I would make sure that the wire goes where it needs to go.

I really don't know, but if the PO just slapped the engine in without a controller of some sort to talk to the tranny, then the TCC will have issues, as well as 4th gear.

So assuming that there could be so kind of magic going on, I would investigate the "tan-blk" wire for the tranny TCC switch, or just disconnect that wire in a convenient place and see what it does.

Perhaps I'm wrong. I haven't had to fix an issue like this on a third gen before. Just trying to give you some ideas.

Re: Okay I give up I need help!

Thanks any advice helps. I just want to avoid tossing parts at it. This car has a been a bit of a pain but I am going to fix it. I just wish I had got a hold of it before the other guy. I love the lt1 but I think things would have been done right the first time.

I guess its time to put her in the air!

Is this the computer controlled q-jet? Has a two-wire connector on top and a three-wire connector on front/left?

You sure ?
If your water pump doesn't look like this then you don't have a "LT1 " short block

You do know that is a gen 2 lt1. they made a gen one also. Mine is a gen 1. Its numbers read 1970 0r 1971 corvette 360 hp lt1. Now granted I dont have the orignal heads for it but it is still an lt1.
