Re: partial vin help

The stamped partial VIN number on the pad in front of the passenger side head won't tell you anything. It's only good if you're building a "numbers matching" car. You'll get a lot more information from the stamped suffix code.

The partial VIN is also only the last 9 digits of the 17 digit VIN so I guess it could give you a year from the code.

What you listed looks more like an engine code but isn't complete. The 1 and C I have no idea but it's possible your G112 or D112 is actually 0112 which would be January 12.

Is the 1C maybe a K?

There should be 2 or 3 letters after the 112 which would be the suffix code.

Re: partial vin help

No help at all. You're going to have to go by the casting number on the bellhousing to get a ballpark idea on the block. Without a suffix code, you can't pinpoint to the exact origin of the block.

Re: partial vin help

I am having an issue finding out what motor I have as well. I have an 87 Trans Am which originally came with a 5.0 (noting from decals and also the VIN) However I was told that a 5.7 350 was dropped into it. After locating the casting numbers behind the head one drivers side it says GM 5.7LG SGI. So I have that, now I am trying to find out what the motor cam out of. The numbers behind the alternator read V12040AN with a (literal) partial VIN of 47, the rest is smooth. I have searched all corners of the internet and can't seem to locate "0AN', "OAN" or "AN" please help!

Re: partial vin help

Stampings can be very difficult to read at times. OAN isn't a good suffix code. I tried to find something that would look similar like CAN but still can't find anything.

Re: partial vin help

Don't worry about it. Unless you're building a numbers matching car, the codes don't mean a whole lot. Once the engine gets rebuilt, it's not original any more. If the block ever gets decked, all those stamped numbers will be gone.

I now am actually trying to find out the year. Reason is because I'm taking the Qjet off and putting on Edelbrock intake and carb, in decided on what to get I have found a huge list of intakes that go on certain years of the 350.. This car is so much fun to get right

Only relates to the head style , so identifying the block year is no help.
If you have cast iron heads with centerbolt covers then you need '87+ intake.
If heads have reg perimeter bolt covers then need '86 and earlier intake
The only difference between the two styles is the angle of the 4 center bolts so if you get a killer deal on the wrong type intake you can just file out those 4 holes to suit your heads

No how about finding out what kind of car the motor came out of? I am looking to get a reman Q-jet but it needs to have the throttle position sensor and mixture control solenoid connections and I am getting a lot of different options with a lot of different prices (ranging from $260-$600)

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: partial vin help

For that purpose, the year of the motor makes NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER. All of those types of things are dependent on the CAR, not the ENGINE. Just get the roght carb for your car.
