v6 to v8 swap myself!
v6 to v8 swap myself!
Hi guys im in desperate need of assistance, my tranny just broke in the v6 4spd so i currently dont have a vehicle. i have a donor v8(355) 5spd z28 that i planned on having swapped in later on by a pro but i need it in now because i have a vehicle. so im fixing to do it myself w/ assistance from a few friends at my friends dads shop. i need all the help i can get from u guys. i have a complete z28 i need to know step by step how to do it. the only things that have me nervous is suspension, hosing, wiring, motor mounts, and emission equiptment. ive read a little about this already but i still feel i need guidance which is why i came to this site. im only 17, sadly i dont have much guidance from my dad(he got burnt really bad and cant do much yet), we have the shop, tools, parts, the whole 9. like i said im kinda in a hurry to get my car back but it has to be done right(pass ispection in PA, be reliable, etc.) any help greatly appreciated!
Also i pondered this since im in a rush to have a vehicle, should i maybe just pull the v6 and 4spd out, put in the the T5 5speed tranny and mount the v6 back up to it? then i wouldnt have to mess w/ radiator, wiring, hosing, brakes, suspension, motormounts, etc. idk what would be better because im in desperite need of a vehicle and im not sure if it would just be a waste of time if i dont just put the v8 in while its already out. plus idk if im ready for 12mpg yet.

Re: v6 to v8 swap myself!
u can use the v8 t5 if u want,
remove ur automatic , get the speedway motors v6 to v8 trans adapter ( 40$;s) and bolt in the v8 t5, along with the pedals and hyd clutch assembly
u would also have to get a flywheel from a v6 stick car, if urs is a carbed motor which i dont know caus eu didnt say what year u will have to get the flywheel from a carbed car or for a carbed car as they are balanced differently from the fuel injected motors
in order to use the v8 transmission behind the v6 u need a clutch from a 4.3 v6 iirc
im not 100% sure on the clutch it may even have been a clutch out of a 4thgen 3.8 car that u need but if this is something u wanted to do i can get u the parts numbers for the correct clutch

No it is a manual 4speed, im decided to go through with the whole swap, v8 5spd, i need like a list of things to do in order from start to finish.
sidenote: ill be changing steering columns aswell, i wanna put the tilt wheel in it from the donor car(the good car doesnt have one) so what will i run into while doing that?

basics are really swap over the front springs from the v8 car, move the front brake line to the front of the xmember, replace the v6 motor mounts with the v8 ones and tyhen the v8 motor and trans will drop in
what year is ur v6 car and what year is the v8 car, is the v8 carbed or fuel injected
also im real curious in the 4 speed i didnt think any v6 car ever came with a 4 speed manual
chances are the v8 t5 would have bolted to the v6 bellhousing, if so alls u would need is a new clutch disk to run the v8 trans
as long as the wiring in the colum is the same it should be as simple as unbolting it,unpluging the wiring conectors and putting the new one in , ive never saped a colum that was different from the original in one of these cars so i dont know for sure

Re: v6 to v8 swap myself!
u can swap over the struts to if they are in better shape then the ones u have on the car now
worry about the colum last, get the motor in and running first this way if something doesnt work after the colum swap it will be easier to narrow down and fix
