little help please
ok guys i know ur all probably getting fed up with all the questions on what needs to be done to swap a v8 into a v6 car now i will start out by saying i have been reading on here for a couple days and i have read the basics of what needs to be done such as the springs the brake line etc. i have an 89 rs with a 2.8 and a 5 speed i know the tranny needs to be changed and im going to put a 5 speed back in it or mabe a 6 speed if i can find one for the right price. i aquired a 305 tpi engine brand new 800 miles on it so im told havent pulled it apart to see but anyway it came out of an 89 iroc the guy did not keep the computer or harness but i have found a harness and computer in an 89 formula firebrid that came with a 350 tpi and a 700r4 now will the computer run the 305 and not get extreamly confused by the fact that it has a standard transmission in it. the reason im posting is i cannot find anything about a 350 harness and computer running a 305 if it is already out there please let me know and ill look into that. also do i need to change the entire harness in the dash for my hvac and gauges as well or will it work i know i need to change the tack but that should be easy enough any body that could help me out i would much apriciate it.
ps. i know finding a v8 car would be easier but im the type of person that likes to say i built it not bought it. and its a daily driver just want it to be more fun and im not rebuilding a 2.8 thats stupid imo and the 305 was the right price thats why i have it instead of a 350

First, I don't for certain know your answers, but I suspect it will just be swapping the chip. Second, it sounds like a good project, but good luck finding a T56 at a good price. Best I've found is $1200. I could do a V8-spec T5 for half that. Third, your car should have a 3.08:1 axle, non-posi, drum brakes, 7.625" 26-spline. There is a clutch that would let you keep your current V6-spec T5 WC, It's weak, but you could baby it for a while, as you gather the V8-sppec version and better axle gearing. You'd just need the V8 bellhousing, the V8 flywheel, and the conversion clutch. It would use the V8-spec pressure plate. Or you could send your T5 out to be rebuilt with the V8 guts, since the case and shift rail stuff is all the same. Lastly, I've done a pair of these swaps, ( 350s in place of 2.8s in '84 T5 & '85 700R-4 Camaros, both ended up 700R-4 ) neither time swapping the front springs. In fact, in both cases, I ended up cutting the V6 front springs by 1 coil, and having no problems. This wasn't the recipe for ultimate canyon-carving, but for street and strip, it worked very well.

found a harness and computer in an 89 that came with a 350 tpi and a 700r4
now will the computer run the 305 and not get extreamly confused by the fact that it has a standard transmission in it.
the reason im posting is i cannot find anything about a 350 harness and computer running a 305 if it is already out there please let me know and ill look into that.

Only the tune on the chip (memcal ) inside the computer varies to determine if it is for a 305 or 350
So a "350" TPI computer and wiring will work so long as you install the correct a 305 TPI chip
FWIW;
The computer controls the lockup in the auto trans ,so a auto chip will run a manual but a manual chip won't run a auto
Engine will run fine , just no control of the lockup

Re: little help please
Read my lips
The computers are identical ; even have the same part #
The only thing that makes it for one engine or the other is the removable chip inside that can be swapped into/ out of any same computer.
You will see no benefit from a aftermarket computer
Take what ever is being given away
Guys on here doing 305 to 350 swaps are always looking for stock 350 memcals for their computers
so you may do a straight swap, your 350 memcal for a 305 memcal ;
possibly make $$ on the deal

Re: little help please
not exactly sure how the z was ordered i know it was an automatic car and that it is a limited slip i pulled the cover off right after i picked it up in a trade looks good inside ill check the gear ratio next weekend if it is the better choice what would it take to put the disc brakes on it off of the firebird. and also would i be better off geting all of the ws6 suspension or just keep mine and do some after market upgrade parts like i was planning
