305 to 355 to 427 finally a build thread

After a rocky 4 year roll with my 91 Formula 1LE T-TOP car I'm finally to an "almost finished point". The car has been from stock 305 tpi 5 speed to a 355 5 speed and now after a complete tear down of the entire car is going to be powered by a 427 that I picked up for $300. The engine came with two stock intakes 396, 396/427 truck intake, edelbrock dual plane, forged pistons and crank, 2 sets of steel valve covers, set of M/T valve covers, and closed chamber heads. I will post pictures of the cars progression since I bought the car. I had the car painted in El Paso Tx where the shop totally jacked my paint and shattered my wrap around spoiler. The red inserts on my redone interior where done in suede and have faded so I plan on dying the suede black. All new weather stripping will be on the car after its new paint job in Black Lava Red done by my cousin at his shop. The new engine is going to Brian at custom Performance for a 600+fwhp build. The TH400 will be built by a gentleman in Logansport IN. The rear end has been welded up with all new raytech rebuild kit and 28 spline moser axles. BMR pan hard bar, BMR strut tower brace, UMI relocation brackets welded to rear end, UMI lower control arms, UMI adjustable torque are w/relocation cross member and drive shaft safety loop, UMI weld in sub-frame connectors, and drop zone lowering springs, kyb shock/struts, founders caster camber plates. Also the car is loosing the power bulge hood and being replaced by the ram air aftermarket piece. Custom balanced drive shaft will be done by Owens in Monticello In. Also, I will be building a custom set of gauges for the dash.

Parts still yet to acquire:
Gauges
PS fender
Transmission
shifter
C6 wheels

windshield removed, surprisingly there was no rust underneath it at all. Custom wheel markets 17x9 direct fit wheels and tires only 5k miles on them now. Those Ill post in the for sale section soon.

Ive already got the hooker super cOmp swap headers and plan on 3 inch duals. As for the engine it will be a full block prep 4 bolt caps. The factory forged crank will be used. Upgrading the rods to a forged set forged piston full street/strip prepped heads with larger valves full port match to edelbrock intake nitrous cam(tbd) or may go with solid or mechanical roller. Th400 will be full manual valve body

Re: 305 to 355 to 427 finally a build thread

Dont care for solid rollers on bbc unless youre not going to put a bunch of street miles on it.

If it were me have use an aggressive flat tappet mechanical.
On a SBC you can have the lifter bores machined to use a .904 dia lifer and run an aggressive SFT cam. Not sure about what the BBC might take.

Ya haven't really decided on a cam. The car will only be driven on nice days and stored the winters.

Be prepared to 'message' those headers alot, to fit the tall-deck, they touch everywhere, floorpan/firewall, suspention, oil pan, chassis, sfc's.

Sure, first its important to know that the block in the pic is a standard 9.8 deck shimmed to the 10.2 height,( I used hardened washers, about 0.45" total placed inbetween the k-mem mount and the bottom of the solid motor mount) I used my only tall-deck for mock-up to get this measurement, but it had to go to the machinist, so thats why I use a shimmed 9.8 just until my 10.8 retuns, the motor originally slated for this build. One thing i noticed was that less than .5" between the two heights at the manifold, grew to over an 1" at the collector.Name: 100_0254.jpg

Passenger side will hit the floor board and firewall just do to the height increase alone.

Thanks for the pics. You weren't lying about the tight fit. I'm assuming you put the headers in first then the engine down

The 496 pictured makes 620hp to the flywheel, but the 525 TT should make double that.

My quest for power ends after this build. I want it streetable. Anything over 600whp is just to much for the street imo

Re: 305 to 355 to 427 finally a build thread

Ok so the new undercoating is on the car. The 427 is at the machine shop but they are backed up until the first week in November. However, after initial inspection of my block and crank he asked who I stole the 427 from since I only paid $300 for it. I'm going to push 11:1 compression with hydro roller cam and run e85. The heads are getting the full work over larger valves performance valve job ect ect
