88 IROC BUILD

Hey guys, some of you may remember a while back i got t boned in my 88 camaro by a guy who ran a red light. Well while in the process of figuring out if i could fix the body, i came across a cheap 88 iroc z that i bought pretty much for the body. well turns out i can fix my body now im building my iroc. Im also five speed swapping in the process. I bought a t5 new cluch and all the goods also got a 305 tpi that i just through in a couple days ago( which was a pain because i painted the engine bay supper gloss black and didnt want to scratch it at all).

well i have a few questions i cant find the map sensor connector or wires. this is a mass airflow car im just not sure if they ran both back in the day like they do now. also i have like 8 wires cut on the passenger side kind of in the fender and there is no fan connectors. i bought a duel fan set up and need help figuring the wiring because i believe these wires may go there. Im sure im missing stuff but ill figure it out later this will help right now and ill post picks of the bay latter.

Re: 88 IROC BUILD

Hey there. I've gone through the majority of what you are fixing very recently on my own 88 IROC.

You should get a service manual before you go too much farther with the wiring. That cut connector was also fragged on mine. I wired up my dual fans with two 4 wire cube relays. The manual will tell you where the wires go. if you check out my build you might get some help there too. There is no MAP so don't worry about it.

Good luck!

Re: 88 IROC BUILD

thanks. im hoping to get it started tomorrow if i can figure the wiring out, someone tried to convert to carb and hacked the harness i have a lot of soldering to do lol. also the fuel pump wont power up. i remember talking to the guy before me he said they were gonna limit the fuel pressure in the tank??? idk how they would do that but any way the fuel pump doesnt work at all now and when i hook a battery up it blows the acc fuse....

Been there, done that, too. I had to cut off the fuel pump relay pigtail and re-wire it to another 4 pin cube relay, just like I did the fans.

From the fuel pump relay pigtail, use an ohmmeter and check the resistance of the tan wire with white tracer. That's the power lead going back to your fuel tank to power up the pump. It should have some amount of resistance, not zero (0.0 ohms) and not OL (or open line.)

If you do get a zero, there are other circuits on that wire that can cause it. The oil pressure switch that powers the fuel pump while the car is running could be the culprit. I suspect that switch because you said that the fuel pump fuse blows when you power it on. I would just unplug that oil pressure switch and put the ohmmeter across it to see if it is grounded out and a miserable failure. You may also find that someone hacked up that plug (as I have found on many of these cars) and once you fix that plug it won't blow fuses any more.

These are things you can check before you even mess with your starter motor.

The book that helped me the most while re-wiring this car is a supplement to the OEM Service Manual. It says 1988 Camaro Electrical Diagnosis, Service Manual Supplement. I got it along with my Service Manual off of Ebay for around 50 bucks. It is by far the best investment I have made in this car yet.

This is exactly like the set I now have:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1988-CHEVY-CHEVROLET-CAMARO-Service-Shop-Repair-Manual-SET-FACTORY-88-OEM-X-/400390501768?pt=Motors_Manuals_Literature&hash=item5d39223588&vxp=mtr
It seems expensive, but the time you save is worth the money.

Re: 88 IROC BUILD

thanks for the info i have an account through my shop for OnDemand5 which has every thing about any car pretty much and even book time estimations and stuff.. I went through all the wiring diagrams and found all the wires i need to check, im going to do that today and pick up my starter... i have to get a new starter anyway because the car came with a big one not a small one to fit the T5.

oh and the oil pressure switch isnt plugged in because its different on the motor compared to the harness... and also it wasnt the fuel pump fuse that blows its the acc fuse unless they are the same i dont recall right now. do you think the books would be better than the account i have? also i couldnt find much on the account about the wiring of dual fans i just seen a single also where is the fan pressure switch, it says on pass side on an ac line i believe? . what is your build called so i can search it and check it out? and thanks again for the help should hopefully have the tranny in and start it today then ill just need a brake line, torque arm mount, tune, and some other small things.

Whew! That's beautiful work, man!

Here's my thread for the IROC:

Its in daily driver status now. I'm preparing to replace the L/F fender and paint it as we speak.

Re: 88 IROC BUILD

hey thanks it was my first time painting with an actual gun.. i did get the car to run the other day after doing two fuel pumps. It is super loud open header i need to find an exhaust. i also still have to figure out the wiring problems, only the tach is working right now. to drive it i need a slave, hydraulic line , reservoir for the clutch and a torque arm mount. also a hard break line in the rear. i just got my wisdom teeth pulled out so havent messed with it lately. should be back at it in a couple days ive been going through my wiring diagrams highlighting what i need so i can jump right in and fix it.

Re: 88 IROC BUILD

still havent messed with the wireing yet haha not what i want to do right now.. i went to the junk yard the other day and got a lot of parts i needed.. found a five speed fourth gen with the torque arm mount already off so i grabed it.. it was only the part that mounts to the tranny.. i grabbed the other part off an auto car brought it back to the shop sectioned it welded it back and made the bolt hole bigger... i think it will work good just have to put new bushings in it.. im in the process of powder coating it right now... when its done ill post some pics..

i also was crunching the numbers i have 1,063 dollars including buying the car in this whole project!! think that makes it a budget build!! right now im stuck im waiting on my torque arm bushing to come in and monday im getting a clutch line made custom because i cant find one any where. after that it should be able to move under its own power!!
