1989 Iroc-Z build / engine & trans swap
Hello!
Well here it is, my 1989 Iroc-Z. I'm 18 years old working on this build with my father. This car started out with and automatic with a 305 which is now being swapped to a 355 with a T5. I started this thread a little late but here are some pics of our progress!

Welcome!
Not sure on how set you are on the T5, but a T56 will be much more enjoyable/durable!!

Thank you five7kid!
Keoman, i realize the T56 would be much better for the build but I already had the T5, so for now I am going to use this but that is definitely something I want to change over down the road.
As for now you can see from these pics that it's down to nothing, and it's time to start sandblasting the engine bay. The plan is to get that all ready and painted, drop the 355 and start the reassembly. I do not plan to put back in the heat, AC, tune port and any emissions back on, I want it to be a basic setup with little electrical throughout the car. I found a painless wiring system which I plan to use to rewire the car, but for now this is what I am at!

While the motor is out, I am thinking it would be a good idea to replace the K member. I want to use long tubes down the road so that will provide more clearance, plus I'm just a sucker for new shinny parts
Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this? Right now I am between UMI and Spohn, just wanted to get an idea of anyone else that may have had problems with either or just your recommendations!

I just put a Umi kmember and a arms in my car. No issues. The long tubes fit fine.

what's the plan for the firewall patches? Grind down the welds and put filler in? I'd like to do the same thing pretty soon

Gsoleski,
Yeah thats the plan. I did the same thing with the battery patch, it came out pretty well all finished and primed.

Re: 1989 Iroc-Z build / engine & trans swap
As I am not putting back heat, AC, emissions or any of that back in, has anyone eliminated any of those wires from the original harness? I have heard people taking all the original wiring out and replacing it with a painless system, but can the original harness still work? I plan on taking the computers out for the security system too, so can that be bypassed? If anyone knows of a good thread with this info that would be very helpful!
Re: 1989 Iroc-Z build / engine & trans swap
I'm in the same boat you are, I did a swap in my 89 rs from 305 tbi to 350 carb and now wondering which part (if all) of the harness can be removed? The car is running now, however it breaks down at around 2500 rpm. all grounds are good.
