finished engine swap, now engine wont crank
ok so i started with a 91 firebird 3.1 v6 auto, now im done i have an 86 camaro 5.0 with a t5 behind it i got the engine and trans bolted in i jumped the starter and fired it up with the help of a little gas in the carb. it ran fine, so i hooked up my fpr and it runs great but now i actually want to drive it but when i turn the key...nothing no click no security light, nothing. i have vats but my computer is out now i am running a standalone carb and distributor so i am not sure if vats is the issue and how to overcome vats system but if ayone has any ideas please let me know and i also cant find the yellow and purple wires for the neutral safety switch i have a tan with white stripe and a purple on my auto harness, is that the wire i need to jump or hook up to my clutch pedal? i really need this car moved out of my driveway, ps car runs fine when i jump the starter(should i just put push button?)

Purple to the starter, yellow from the ignition switch. Have them meet at the clutch safety switch, and you shouldn't have a problem.

I know what you mean! Went through it with my LS1/T56 swap into an originally auto car, finally figured out that's all it wanted. Mine didn't have VATS, though.

Diagram in this link
https://www.thirdgen.org/vats_passkey_system
shows the tan with white stripe from the starter relay with the yellow from the key on the other side,
just join those two wires together at the relay to bypass the starter relay operated by VATS.
the purple wire should go to the starter , can check by putting 12V on it and see if the engine cranks over.
If it does put that wire to the clutch switch with the tan/white wire on the other side of switch

I'll admit I haven't worked on a VATS car, but I'm wondering why fuss with any of that? The purple wire to the start solenoid is still there, right? Is the yellow wire from the ignition switch small gauge? If so, then I can see using a relay to the purple wire. But, the rest of that VATS stuff is going to be moot (I'm assuming the new engine is non-computer controlled, since a carb was mentioned).

Re: finished engine swap, now engine wont crank
do you have any power in the car at all?
way back when i was young, i chased a similar condition for about an hour before realizing that i didn't hook the battery back up. i was young (16) and inexperienced, but i did manage to put chrome valve covers on my 78 Cordoba...
i've had a couple of other cars where i didn't hook the bulkhead connector at the firewall back up after putting the front clips back on the car.. you miss the simple stuff when you're tired..
