My son has $1400 and no....

Engine for his 89 RS.

Who do you know local to metro Detroit that can help with a fresh 305 (we're sticking with this for now. No discussion )
Long block so we can get his car back on the road by mid April?

We're ready to buy today, so tell me who is your favorite metro Detroit engine guy.

Thanks.

Re: My son has $1400 and no....

You may not want to discuss it, but reality is that if you're looking for a 305 long block you may be stuck with the big box store remans. Can't say I could think of any good engine builder willing to waste time on a 305 in hopes someone will come in and buy it at random. Is your block irrepairable? If you've just got to stick with the 305 and its repairable, that's probably your best bet. As for machine shops, I can say I had poor experience from A&A Racing in Davison and would not go there again.

305's will run forever if taken care of, I would buy a long block off of Craigslist, replace the seals and drop it in, really shouldn't be more than $600 to find a good used 305 and do the maintenance on it

No.

I put a used motor in last year and got one month out of it.

I'm very happy to wrench with my son but is rather change oil than engines.

For anyone insisting on us doing a 350, I would say ok if you agree to help with the computer and harness.

My son likes his car and just wants it running so we can take our time building what he wants.

I've found a decent replacement at oreillys. I was just hoping to find a local builder that would/could offer suggestions to improve performance with in the parameters of the existing computer.

350 is simple, buy 350, put TBI on top with 350 injectors, change prom in ECM to 350 prom, everything else remains the same as long as the long block has a 350 knock sensor in it

The question still stands. Where do I go for a motor?

I'd stay away from Jasper engines, their quality can be hit or miss from what I have read online.
