Re: simple engine swap ?

1) yes, but you would be stepping down in performance.
2) yes, but if its an older style engine there will be minor mods needed.
3) yes
4) no

Re: simple engine swap ?

I plan on getting one soon to build over the summer/winter i would just rebuild mine but i think the pistons and cylinders are worn so i would have to get the cylinders bored out and i dont want to do that
by build i mean cam and everything that goes with that and mybey see if my heads are good and put them on the regular 305 to give it the high output heads know the valves and rods are part of the headsheads

Re: simple engine swap ?

TPI engines have flat top pistons and TBI's have dished pistons. You can make it work with whatever combo you decide on. A truck block came factory with a 168 tooth flex plate and a car block has a 153 tooth flex plate. They use different starters with different mounting bolt patterns. Make sure the block you get has the same mounting pattern as the starter you have now. Some blocks are double drilled and some aren't.

Re: simple engine swap ?

The better answer if about if your TPI intake will fit is as long as the heads match. the '86 and earlier heads or the '87 and later heads have a different center bolt angle. The intake can be hogged out with dremel to work, but that is kinda shade tree. If you run the casting numbers on the heads while at the yard, you should be able to see what year the heads are fairly easily.

As far as charcoal canister, I don't believe there is a smaller one, but I think a few people have relocated it to the underside of the tray where it sits stock. You may have to lengthen some vacuum hoses and wires in order for it to reach.

Mines a 87
I would be looking for 87 to 93 motors? I think im going to try and find a jy tpi engine that i can build as my local jy charges 220 bucks with out srt alt and pullys and they havr a 30 return policy so if i pull the heads the same day i get it ill be able to see if its good if not ill be able to return it

Re: simple engine swap ?

Yeah, that will work for now. The only thing is that you mentioned was building the motor down the road, and you will be limited to the '87 and up heads. If that isn't an issue, then yeah, go ahead and pull the trigger. If you are able to exchange the heads, check out the spot between the middle two cylinders on each head. That's where SBC heads tend to crack.
