383 swap now bell housing broke

My Camaro with originally 2.8 car with the t5 swapped for a 355 now it's got a 383 vortec block. I put a 11in clutch in it now The pressure plate scrubs on the bell housing. I am wondering if they use the V-6 bell housing for the 355. If not what bell housing do I need to fit my 11 inch clutch. When the people did the 355 swap it looks like they cut out the bottom part of the bell housing so the flywheel and pressure plate would fit. Please guys help me I want to drive it this summer

Re: 383 swap now bell housing broke

You need a bellhousing from a 305 with a T5 and even then it may be a smaller bellhousing which doesn't allow a 168 tooth flywheel/

Re: 383 swap now bell housing broke

Right:

The 6-cyl BH won't fit a V8.

No BH except one out of these cars, for a T-5, will fit a T-5 out of one of these cars.

A 14" flywheel will fit inside that BH, but neither a stock starter for it nor a 11" clutch will fit. Only way to make that work is to get one of those cheeeeeeezy things they used in some of the late 2nd gen cars (14" wheel w 10.4" clutch) and a mini-starter. Not all of those will work either I don't think, pick and choose wisely.

Best plan is, get a new flywheel for 86-up Camaro/Firebird V8, and have it "unbalanced" to whatever your crank requires if necessary. You'll find there are 2 weights; you'll like the lighter one ALOT better.

I hope for your sake that you're not trying to use that 6-cyl transmission behind your 383. You will hate it, and it probably won't last long. Even less long than an already inadequately weeeeeeek V8 one would.

Yes I am runing the v6 t5 for now because my car doesn't hook with the tires on it now. I'll get better tires when I can afford the 4l60e swap. But I'm lost, why would they cut the bottom of the bell housing out. I really don't wAnt a smaller clutch in the car but if that's what I have to get I will. The car only has 2 or 3 miles on it since the swap. I paid like 700 for the flywheel and clutch setup really don't wNt to do away with that

Re: 383 swap now bell housing broke

They cut the BH because they are Cletus and BillyBob and all they know how to do is hack jobs.

I paid
Shoulda asked BEFORE you did that, not AFTER.

Just because you sunk your life savings into it doesn't automatically make it A Good Idea. The parts don't care about your bank account; all they care is, what fits. Consider it a great lesson learned The Hard Way. Maybe you can sell all that and use the money toward buying stuff that fits.

My good judgment is the result of all my experience. Too bad all my experience is the result of my bad judgment.

You will HATE HATE HATE HATE that 6-cyl transmission.

No T-5 though, is gonna last very long behind a 383 if you race it. Might get lucky for awhile, might not, might grenade the first launch; odds however are not in your favor. Might want to consider NOT sinking ANY money into ANYTHING T-5 related and instead, hunt down a T-56 swap.

Can't use a 4L60E without the "E" (electronics) to back it up. Gotta have a computer with enough brain cells to control a transmission. The old crap can't do that.

Regardless, if your REAL goal is to put some other transmission in it, DO NOT spend even ONE DIME on that T-5. Throw it in th etrash and don't look back. EVERY PENNY you waste on that excrement, puts you one penny farther from reaching your goal. Don't be stooopid and use your own money against yourself, to make it harder to get what you want. Kinda dummm, really.

Re: 383 swap now bell housing broke

^ I agree with all of those points, but a lakewood scattershield for a T5 will fit over an 11" clutch. It wont help the super weak T5 or the crappy V6 gearing

Re: 383 swap now bell housing broke

We'll today I took my friend for a ride to show him what it could do. I went to down shift to slow down and now the trans is gone. Now I'm going to start looking for a t-56 or a 4l60e trans. The auto swap is going to cost me 3k to do

4l60e trans
Don't forget...

Re: 383 swap now bell housing broke

Makes ALOT more sense to use a 4L60 !E, aka 700-R4.

Or better yet maybe, a T-56.
