Cheap 350 swap idea
Well, after having an accident and getting a lot of work done on my 89 RS, I figure I might as well pull the stock 305 since I'm already under the hood.
I want to swap in a 350 that I'll rebuild myself, so far this is my plan. I hope to make 350ish hp at the crank.
-350 short block (sourced from a local pick-n-pull). I've heard that the 96-01 gm truck blocks can stand a reasonable amount of power, but of course I'll take any sbc 350 that's in good shape. I'll reuse the bottom end.
-For the carburetor i'll dig around in the junkyard, assuming I'll need at least 650 cfm, so maybe I'll get lucky and stumble upon a nice Holley double pumper.
-ProComp aluminum cylinder heads (210cc intake, 64cc chambers, 2.02 and 1.60 valves) Do I need straight or angled plugs? I don't recall.
- Camshaft....not sure yet, but it will obviously need to work with the procomp heads, I'm open to recommendations.
-Edelbrock Performer RPM ntake, I've heard good things about it, but will it fit under the stock hood with an open air element? (non-drop base).
Well, I have to go, but I'll add the rest of my plan later. I'm open to any criticism, thanks.

Re: Cheap 350 swap idea
Well I'm back.
The above items were the main things, but I do have some questions. First off, going from TBI to carb., what will I need to do about fuel delivery? will my fuel pump need replacing? its brand new haha so I hope not. Also, will all of the accessories from my 305 swap right over? (AC and whatnot). What are all of the little things that I will need? I have planned for assembly lube, gaskets, filters, spark plugs and wires, HEI distributor, new hoses. I've got tools and equipment to do the swap.
All in all, does the idea sound good thus far? do you think it could be done for $1200? I've seen superchevy make 400hp for about that much, so why not me right
. I figure this plus a 3" exhaust, shift kit, and 3.42 gears should make the RS a pretty mean street car.

Re: Cheap 350 swap idea
Any 350 roller block will handle 350hp. 96-01 will be able to do that with the vortec heads that come on them.
Go roller block it will be better in the wrong run.
Forget the procomp heads. You are only going for 350ish HP stock vortec or even world products S/R heads will get you there for the same amount of money and you will get a better product.
GL finding a carb in a junk yard, any good yard would have pulled it ages ago and sold it. I always have good luck on craigslist then rebuild them.
You will probably need a drop base cleaner with the RPM performer but that is not a big issue.
Choose the cam last but for roller motors I like the XR276HR

As far as fuel delivery, all i had to do on my car was just put a regulator in for a carb setup and the factory fp will work. Try craigslist for a cheap carb. Id say stick with the vortec heads.

Re: Cheap 350 swap idea
Your on the right path but need alittle curve in the road.
Cheap, easy, fast....1996--02 running Vortec 350 pull out from wrecked truck, anywhere between $300-800
Summit stage III vortec intake $185
LT1/LT4 hot cam
Howards 98212 valve springs $48
VTO 4134 +.050" locks $16
Do the "ghetto grind" on the stock retainers
Fel pro 1094 head gaskets $45
Fel pro MS98000T intake gasket set $65
600 cfm single pumper, vac sec carb
HEI large cap dist.. Skip white $90 one works great
Long tube headers, aftermarket Y pipe, good exhaust system.
Use your stock fuel pump and add the $95 Mallory adjustable fuel press. reg. and turn pressure down to 5 to 5.5 psi.
You have your 350 HP easy... In fact that will make closer to 400 HP.
Pair that with a 2500-2800 stall converter, 3.42-3.73 rear gears and you will have a street beast on your hands.
The vortec heads are VERY GOOD heads. In fact the best production chevy heads ever and better than some aftermarket heads.
If you MUST good aftermarket alum heads then look smaller.. 210cc intake port is way too big for such a mild 350 engine. Big heads like that will kill off port speed and you end up with a lazy engine.
I only run a 200 cc head on a 10.34:1 355 with a 249/252@.050" .570"/.579" lift cam, 3500 stall, 3.89 rear gear.
With a milder engine like your building, stick with 170-180 cc heads, 190cc would be the very max.
But like I said, I would use the vortec heads... I have built many 350-425 HP vortec headed engines. My S10 has a vortec headed 355 which is my daily driver, where as my camaro has 200cc brodix heads and it's only a weekend fair weather/drag car

Those 2 things needs addressing... I'm not a fan of the summit carbs. It's an old holley design that never quite worked right. I would recommend an edelbrock 600 cfm elec choke (think its #1406) or a holley 4160/4150 style 600 cfm vac sec.
Also that fuel pressure reg, will not work... Your stock elec pump puts out too much pressure and that reg can not handle the high pressure of the stock pump.
This is the go to reg for the swap http://www.summitracing.com/parts/maa-4307m/overview/
No break in oil or zinc needed for a roller cam and lifters

Re: Cheap 350 swap idea
As soon as you start a rebuild the cheap is gone. Plus with a later engine it probably won't need the rebuild anyway.
210 cc intake ports are way too much for any street 350. Any 180 head will pull better every day, but for cheap, just keep the '96-up Vortec heads and choose the cam accordingly. No more than 0.480" intake lift, with at least 10 degrees extra exhaust duration.

Re: Cheap 350 swap idea
Thanks for the help everyone, Spring Break is this coming week so I ought to have a little time to shop for a block. Also, I think I'm going to have an exhaust shop install a new 3" setup (headers back). I'm going with Hedman shortys and the corresponding Y pipe, and a cheap 3" cat, as visual inspection is all we have here. Single exhaust that dumps out somewhere before it will be visible. Not trying to change the thread topic, but if anyone has a favorite muffler please shoot me a PM. I want a nice rumble at idle, and to sound like a muscle car at WOT, but I dont want to wake up my whole neighborhood when I'm doing 20mph. Thanks!
